Zedex is a combined drug with antitussive and expectorant effects.
Release form and composition
Dosage form of release - syrup: transparent, thick, orange, has the smell of menthol (in polyethylene bottles of 100 ml, in a cardboard box 1 bottle complete with a plastic cup of 10 ml).
Active substances in 1 ml of syrup:
- dextromethorphan hydrobromide - 1 mg;
- bromhexine hydrochloride - 0.8 mg;
- ammonium chloride - 10 mg.
Auxiliary components: propylene glycol - 36.33 mg; sodium saccharinate - 3 mg; levomenthol - 0.5 mg; vanillin - 0.1 mg; sucrose - 600 mg; benzoic acid - 0.7 mg; dextrose - 350 mg; sodium benzoate - 0.35 mg; fruit flavor - 0.0012 ml; sunset yellow dye - 0.067 mg; purified water - up to 1 ml.
Pharmacological properties
Zedex is a combined drug, the action of which is due to its constituent components:
- dextromethorphan: has an antitussive and sedative effect, increases the threshold of sensitivity of the cough center of the medulla oblongata (it does not lead to depression of the respiratory center), does not have an analgesic effect, does not cause an addictive effect;
- bromhexine: has a secretolytic (mucolytic), expectorant and slight antitussive effect; mucolytic effect is provided due to depolymerization and liquefaction of mucopolysaccharide and mucoprotein fibers;
- ammonium chloride: has an expectorant effect.
Indications for use
Zedex is prescribed to relieve the symptoms of flu, colds, acute respiratory viral infections that occur with coughing.
Contraindications
Absolute:
- exacerbation of peptic ulcer;
- combined use with other drugs containing the substances included in Zedex;
- age up to 6 years;
- pregnancy and the period of breastfeeding;
- individual intolerance to the components of the drug.
Relative (diseases / conditions in the presence of which caution is required):
- renal / hepatic impairment;
- bronchial asthma.
Instructions for the use of Zedex: method and dosage
The syrup is taken orally.
Recommended application scheme:
- adults and children from 12 years old: 2-3 times a day, 2 teaspoons;
- children 6-12 years old: 3-4 times a day, 1 / 2-1 teaspoon.
Side effects
Possible side reactions: exacerbation of peptic ulcer disease, dyspeptic symptoms, allergic reactions (in the form of skin rash, rhinitis, etc.), increased serum transaminase levels, sleep disturbance, drowsiness, increased excitability (especially in children).
Overdose
The main symptoms: nausea, vomiting and other disorders of the digestive system, agitation of the central nervous system.
Therapy: taking activated charcoal, gastric lavage, symptomatic treatment.
Overdoses that are life-threatening are unknown.

With impaired renal function
In renal failure, Zedex should be administered with caution.
For violations of liver function
In liver failure, Zedex should be administered with caution.
Drug interactions
The simultaneous use of other drugs used to treat bronchopulmonary diseases is possible.
Simultaneously with drugs with antitussive action (including those containing codeine) Zedex is not prescribed.
The alcohol that is part of the syrup can change the effect of drugs used simultaneously.
Bromhexine, which is part of Zedex, promotes better penetration of antibiotics (amoxicillin, cephalexin, erythromycin, ampicillin, oxytetracycline) into the lung tissue, however, its combined use with salicylates, oxyphenbutazone and phenylbutazone can lead to severe irritation of the gastric mucosa.
Possible interactions with dextromethorphan:
- monoamine oxidase inhibitors: effects on the central nervous system and severe respiratory depression (the combination is contraindicated);
- amiodarone: inhibition of dextromethorphan metabolism in the liver and an increase in its toxicity (the combination is contraindicated);
- antidepressants of the group of serotonin reuptake inhibitors, including paroxetine, fluoxetine: development of interaction (the combination is contraindicated);
- opioids: potentiation of their analgesic effect.
