Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Benzocaine is a local anesthetic that reduces pain when swallowing, which accompanies infectious and inflammatory pathologies of the mouth and throat.
Benzalkonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound, a cationic surfactant that disrupts the permeability of cell membranes, interacts with lipoproteins. It has an antiseptic effect, is effective against gram-positive bacteria, fungus of the genus Candida albicans, some lipophilic viruses.
Tyrothricin is an antibiotic consisting mainly of tyrocidin and gramicidin. It has a bactericidal local effect, which causes rupture of phosphorylation processes in the chain of cellular respiration and destruction of bacterial cell membranes. Unlike systemic antibiotics, tyrothricin has a specific mechanism of action that does not cause cross-resistance to the drug.
Pharmacokinetics
Benzocaine is slowly absorbed due to its low water solubility. Being an ester derivative of para-aminobenzoic acid, it is cleaved by esterase in the liver and blood plasma to form para-aminobenzoic acid and ethyl alcohol. Ethyl alcohol metabolism ends with the formation of acetyl coenzyme A.
Para-aminobenzoic acid is excreted by the kidneys unchanged or is conjugated with glycine.
Benzalkonium chloride is almost not absorbed, therefore it does not have a resorptive effect and is excreted by the kidneys. Its accumulation was not found in body tissues.
Tyrothricin - systemic absorption is very low, does not affect the intestinal microflora.
