Pharmacological action of Chlorhexidine

Chlorhexidine has a bactericidal (destroying bacteria) and antiseptic (disinfecting) effect. The drug has pronounced bactericidal properties. Many gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms are highly sensitive to it. According to reviews, Chlorhexidine has a good ability to stop the growth and division of fungi. Fungistatic activity of the drug is manifested in relation to trichophytes (ringworm pathogens), dermatophytes (causing skin diseases) and Candida fungi.

Indications for the use of Chlorhexidine

This drug is widely used for treating the hands of surgeons and the operating field, as well as for cold sterilization of surgical instruments.

Chlorhexidine treatment of inflammation of the bladder - cystitis is justified. In this case, the drug is used to flush the bladder and injected into it through a urinary catheter.

According to the instructions, Chlorhexidine can also be used in obstetric and gynecological practice. It is used in the following cases:

• For the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (syphilis, genital herpes, chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, ureaplasmosis, etc.);

• Treatment of colpitis of various etiology and bacterial vaginosis;

How to use Chlorhexidine

According to the instructions, Chlorhexidine is used to treat the hands of surgeons, the operating field and cold sterilization of surgical instruments. In this case, the ready-made 20% solution of Chlorhexidine is diluted in a ratio of 1 to 40 with ethyl alcohol (70%). Hands are washed in the resulting solution for three minutes, and the operating field is wiped twice with an interval of two minutes. For sterilization, the instruments must be completely immersed in the solution for two minutes. According to the instructions for Chlorhexidine, sterilization of instruments can also be carried out with its 0.02% aqueous solution. In this case, the exposure is increased to half an hour.

For the treatment of Chlorhexidine cystitis, only aqueous sterile solutions are used. One procedure consumes 300.0-400.0 ml of a 0.2% solution. Washing is done once a day. Usually, 5 to 12 procedures are prescribed.

For the treatment of vaginal bacteriosis and colpitis, the drug is used intravaginally. With the patient in the supine position, one suppository is injected into the vagina twice a day. Chlorhexidine treatment is continued for 5 to 20 days.

The use of Chlorhexidine is also possible for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections. It is necessary to insert 1 suppository into the vagina no later than two hours after accidental sexual intercourse.
