Pectolvan ivy is an expectorant of herbal origin.
Release form and composition
Dosage forms of the drug Pectolvan ivy:
- syrup: a clear solution of a pale brown color with a cherry smell and a sweet fruit taste, the appearance of light opalescence is allowed (100 ml in a bottle, in a cardboard box 1 bottle complete with a dosing spoon);
- capsules: size No. 3, hard gelatine, dark green cap and body; the contents of the capsule are light brown powder with the inclusion of small particles from light to darker color (10 pieces in a blister, 3 blisters in a cardboard box).
Each pack also contains instructions for the use of Pectolvan ivy.
1 ml of syrup contains:
- active substance: dry extract of ivy leaves * - 7 mg (4–8: 1);
- additional components: citric acid monohydrate, sodium citrate, sorbitol (E 420), xanthan gum, potassium sorbate, purified water, food flavoring "Cherry 667" (propylene glycol solvent).
1 capsule contains:
- active substance: dry extract of ivy leaves * - 52.5 mg (4–8: 1);
- additional components: maltodextrin, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, copovidone, corn starch;
- capsule shell: titanium dioxide (E 171), gelatin, indigotine (E 132), yellow iron oxide (E 172).
* Dry extract of ivy leaves (4–8: 1) is obtained from the leaves of the common ivy (Hederae helicis e folium) of the Araliaceae family, the extractant is 30% ethanol.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Pectolvan ivy is a herbal medicine. Thanks to the biologically active substances contained in the preparation - glycosides (saponins), it has an expectorant, antitussive, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effect. Provides a decrease in the viscosity of sputum and helps to facilitate its discharge.
Pharmacokinetics
The pharmacokinetics of the drug have not been studied.
Indications for use
- acute diseases of the respiratory tract of an inflammatory nature, accompanied by a cough;
- chronic inflammatory diseases of the bronchi - as a drug for symptomatic therapy.
Contraindications
Absolute:
- fructose intolerance (for syrup);
- children under 12 years old (for capsules);
- hypersensitivity to any component of Pectolvan ivy, as well as to plants of the Araliev family.
Caution is required to carry out drug treatment in the presence of gastritis or gastric ulcer.
Pectolvan ivy, instructions for use: method and dosage
The expectorant is taken orally.
Pectolvan ivy capsules for adolescents over 12 years old and adults should be taken 3 times a day, 1 pc.
Pectolvan ivy syrup for children and adults is prescribed depending on the age of the patient:
- infants and children from 1 to 6 years old: 2 times a day, 2.5 ml;
- children from 6 to 12 years old: 2 times a day, 5 ml;
- adolescents over 12 years old and adults: 3 times a day (morning, afternoon and evening), 5 ml.
Dosing of Pectolvan ivy syrup is made using the supplied measuring spoon. Before each use, the syrup bottle must be shaken vigorously.
For both dosage forms of the drug, the duration of treatment is set by the doctor individually. In simple cases, the course can be 7 days. In order to consolidate the therapeutic effect after removal of the symptoms of the lesion, it is recommended to continue taking Pectolvan ivy for another 2-3 days. If there is no improvement in the condition, it is necessary to consult a doctor.
Side effects
During drug therapy, the appearance of allergic reactions, such as skin rashes, itching, urticaria, shortness of breath, swelling of the mucous membranes, can rarely be recorded. When using syrup, in rare cases, it is also possible to develop a laxative effect due to the ivy sorbitol included in Pectolvan.
Persons with hypersensitivity may experience gastrointestinal disorders: nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea.
Overdose
In the case of using the phytopreparation in doses exceeding the recommended ones, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or agitation may occur. Treatment is symptomatic.

If, during therapy, it is not possible to relieve the symptoms of the disease or the appearance of fever, shortness of breath, as well as purulent or bloody sputum when coughing up, it is necessary to urgently consult a doctor.
Patients with diabetes should take into account that 2.5 ml of Pectolvan ivy syrup contains 963 mg of a sweetener - sorbitol, which is equivalent to 0.08 bread units (XE). In 3 capsules, the daily dose of the drug contains 0.006 75 XE.
If you have an intolerance to some sugars, you should consult your doctor before using the syrup.
Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms
The phytopreparation does not affect the ability to drive a car and control other complex and potentially dangerous equipment.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
Since there are no data on the safety of using Pectolvan ivy by pregnant and lactating women, it is not recommended to carry out expectorant therapy during pregnancy and lactation.
Pediatric use
The drug in the form of a syrup is recommended for use in pediatric practice. Pectolvan ivy for children under 2 years old should only be taken in a hospital setting under close medical supervision. The presence of prolonged or recurrent cough in children under 4 years of age requires medical diagnosis before starting treatment.
Taking capsules is recommended for adolescents over 12 years old.
Drug interactions
With the combined use of the drug with other drugs / drugs, the development of its side effects was not observed. As a result, treatment with Pectolvan ivy can be combined with the use of other drugs, such as antibiotics.
However, taking an herbal preparation at the same time as antitussives such as codeine or dextromethorphan is not recommended without the advice of a specialist, as this combination may make it difficult to cough up liquefied sputum.
