Licorice roots is a phytopreparation with an expectorant effect.

Release form and composition

Dosage form of release of Licorice roots:

  • crushed roots: pieces of roots of various shapes, usually fibrous, yellow or with cork remnants, in more rare cases - individual pieces of brown or grayish-brown cork, have a faint smell and a cloying, sweet, somewhat irritating taste of water extract (in a cardboard box by 35, 50, 60, 75 or 100 g);
  • roots powder: a mixture of pieces of underground shoots and roots of different shapes, yellow / brownish-yellow, in more rare cases, covered with brown cork and individual pieces of cork from brown to grayish-brown, which pass through a sieve with holes of 2 mm; odorless, the taste of water extraction is sugary, sweet, somewhat irritating (in a cardboard box of 10, 20, 24, 30 or 50 filter bags, 1.5 g each, or 10 or 20 filter bags, 2 g each).

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Licorice roots contain the following biologically active substances: glycyrrhizic acid, licurazide, flavonoids, liquiditoside, mucous membranes, etc.

The infusion has an anti-inflammatory and expectorant effect.

Indications for use

According to the instructions, Licorice roots are prescribed simultaneously with other drugs in the treatment of the following diseases / conditions:

  • infectious and inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract, mainly in the presence of poorly separated, viscous and thick secretions;
  • chronic inflammatory diseases of the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract, including hyperacid gastritis, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer.

Contraindications

  • bronchial asthma;
  • period of exacerbation of gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer;
  • gastritis;
  • pregnancy and lactation;
  • individual intolerance to licorice preparations.

Children of Licorice are not prescribed roots before the age of 1 year.

Instructions for the use of Licorice roots: method and dosage

Licorice roots are taken orally.

Cooking method:

  • broth: about 2 tablespoons of crushed raw materials in an enamel bowl are poured with 1 glass of boiled chilled water and, covered with a lid, heated for 30 minutes in a boiling water bath, then cooled for 10 minutes at room temperature, filtered and squeezed out the remaining raw materials. The resulting broth is brought to the original with boiled water;
  • infusion: 2 filter bags of powder roots are poured into a glass / enamel bowl 1/2 cup boiling water and, covered with a lid, insist for 15 minutes, after which the filter bags are wrung out. The resulting broth is brought to the original with boiled water.

Recommended decoction / infusion regimen:

  • adults and children from 12 years old: 3-4 times a day, 1 tablespoon;
  • children 5-12 years old: 3-4 times a day, 1 dessert spoon;
  • children 3–5 years old: 2–3 times a day, 1 dessert spoon;
  • children 1-3 years old: 2-3 times a day, 1 teaspoon.

The duration of the therapeutic course is 14–21 days.

It is recommended to shake the broth / infusion before taking.

Side effects

Possible violations: allergic reactions; in some cases - dyspeptic symptoms (in the form of diarrhea).

Overdose

With prolonged use, the following side reactions may develop: increased blood pressure, hypokalemia, the appearance of peripheral edema (associated with disorders of water-salt metabolism).
