Abdominal tomography

With the help of tomography of the abdominal cavity, the doctor receives detailed information about the condition of the organs located in the peritoneum: kidneys, pancreas, liver, adrenal glands, spleen, blood vessels, abdominal lymph nodes. Computed tomography is successfully used to diagnose blood diseases: lymphogranulomatosis and lymphoma.

In men, tomography of the abdominal organs helps to identify ascites, inflammatory processes in the peritoneum, to determine cancer of the prostate gland, rectum, bones, soft tissues, bladder and its stage. Be sure to prescribe a tomography for the initial examination in case of pelvic injury, after surgery or radiotherapy for rectal cancer.

For women, abdominal tomography is prescribed to diagnose pathologies of the uterus, bladder cancer, with pelvic injuries, as a primary examination for inflammation in the pelvis.

Computed tomography is indispensable for diagnostics, because as a result of its implementation, a high-quality three-dimensional image is obtained, it allows you to cut internal organs with a size of 0.5 mm and reveal minor changes in the peritoneal organs that cannot be seen on other examinations.

Preparation for tomography of the abdominal cavity

In the evening before the procedure, the patient can only eat a light supper; breakfast is not allowed on the day of the tomography. If the examination was scheduled for the second half of the day, only a light breakfast is allowed: liquid porridge, juice, coffee, solid food should not be.

In addition, if it is supposed to use contrast during the examination, the night before, the patient is prescribed to drink half a liter of 15% urografin solution in small portions in preparation for abdominal tomography (two ampoules of 75% contrast solution are diluted with 1.5 liters of boiled water). Another half liter should be drunk on the day of the examination, in the morning, and take the remaining 500 ml with you and drink 30 and 15 minutes before the tomography. Contrast can be injected intravenously - Ultravist, 50-150 ml.

The contrast during the examination is used if it is necessary to diagnose cysts, tumors, metastases, pathologies of large vessels of the abdominal cavity. It is allowed to introduce contrast directly on tomography - when scanning a specific area of interest.

Abdominal tomography is painless, during which the patient is supposed to lie still, periodically he is asked to hold his breath for a short time. Before starting the procedure, the patient must remove all objects containing metal. After the end of the tomography, you can immediately return to your usual lifestyle.

Tomography assumes radiation exposure, and, despite its low dose, the procedure is prescribed with caution, in case of emergency, to young children. In order for the child to remain motionless during the study, in some cases the use of anesthesia is allowed. For the same reason, anesthesia is used when examining critically ill patients.

Contraindications to abdominal tomography

It is impossible to prescribe an examination to a patient who is allergic to iodine and preparations containing it, with increased thyroid function, severe bronchial asthma, with a creatinine level of more than 1.5 mg / dl. The study is contraindicated in pregnant, lactating women.

Taking into account the existing contraindications, the patient is prescribed to donate blood for a biochemical analysis before undergoing a tomography - to establish the level of urea, ALT, AST, creatinine.
