Treatment of pharyngitis with folk remedies in adults and children is very popular. With an uncomplicated course of the disease, methods of non-traditional therapy are highly effective. But it must be remembered that in the acute form of the disease, the causative agent of which are bacteria, one should not abandon the use of antibiotics.
The use of traditional medicine methods in the treatment of pharyngitis is most effective in the uncomplicated course of the disease
Pharyngitis is an inflammatory process that occurs in the pharyngeal mucosa. The causative agents of the disease are pathogenic microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi), which are transmitted by airborne droplets or by contact. The predisposing factors for the development of pharyngitis include the use of cold drinks or food.
Pharyngitis symptoms
Symptoms can vary depending on the underlying cause of the pharyngitis and associated upper respiratory tract infections. The following signs indicate the development of the disease:
- dry and sore throat (at the initial stage);
- sore throat that gets worse when swallowing saliva;
- dry cough, which becomes wet at a late stage of the disease;
- weakness and lack of appetite;
- increased body temperature;
- enlargement of the cervical lymph nodes.
How to treat pharyngitis with folk remedies
Pharyngitis therapy at the initial stage with the use of traditional medicine can quickly reduce the severity of symptoms. According to patients' reviews, such methods are the most effective in the chronic form of the disease.
Gargling
Rinsing the oropharyngeal cavity is one of the most commonly used methods of pharyngitis therapy. The procedure helps to reduce inflammation and pain. For this, various solutions are used that can be prepared at home:
- Solution with soda, salt and iodine. The agent is active against pathogenic microorganisms, including fungal infections. To prepare it, dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of table or sea salt and baking soda in one glass of warm boiled water. Then it is filtered and three drops of iodine are added. Gargle for 5 minutes. It is not recommended to swallow the prepared solution. The procedure is carried out 2-3 times a day for three days.
- Decoctions of medicinal herbs. Plants that have anti-inflammatory effects can be used to treat pharyngitis. Effective use of calendula, chamomile, sage, lungwort, St. John's wort. To prepare the product, one tablespoon of herbs or herbal collection is poured into 1 liter of water and boiled over low heat for 2-3 minutes. After the broth has cooled, it is used to gargle the throat. The procedure is carried out 3-4 times a day until the symptoms of the disease disappear. The finished broth can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days. It must be warmed up before use.
- Tincture of calendula. To prepare the product, one tablespoon of flowers is poured with 100 ml of 70% ethyl alcohol and left for a week in a dark place. After this period, the product is filtered and stored in a glass container in a cool, dark place. Before the procedure, one tablespoon of the tincture is diluted in 200 ml of warm water. At the initial stage of the disease, gargling is performed every three hours. In the future, the frequency of use is reduced to 3 times a day. Ready-made calendula tincture can be purchased at the pharmacy.
Products based on honey and propolis
When treating pharyngitis at home, honey and propolis are often used. They have an antiseptic effect, allow you to quickly stop the inflammatory process, soften the throat and reduce pain.
Beekeeping products are often used in the treatment of pharyngitis at home
One effective and simple method is to keep a small amount of honey in your mouth until it is completely dissolved. To enhance the therapeutic effect, it can be mixed with butter, linseed or sea buckthorn oil.
Propolis tincture is also often used. You can buy it at the pharmacy or prepare it yourself. Propolis is crushed and poured with cold water, which allows you to remove various impurities from it. Then 30 g of propolis is placed in a glass container, filled with 100 ml of 70% alcohol and insisted for a week, shaking occasionally. After that, the product is filtered and poured into a dark glass bottle.
To rinse the throat, add one tablespoon of the tincture to 200 ml of warm water. The procedure can be carried out up to 5 times a day.
To prepare the propolis oil extract, add 5 ml of sea buckthorn oil and glycerin to 100 ml of the previously prepared tincture. The finished product is used to lubricate the throat three times a day until the symptoms are relieved.
You can also use an aloe-based medicine. To prepare it, the cut leaf of the plant is placed in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, it is crushed into gruel using a blender.
Aloe can be added to honey to enhance its effectiveness.
50 g of honey is melted in a water bath, after which 10 ml of ready-made propolis tincture and one tablespoon of chopped aloe are added. This tool is used to lubricate the throat in the morning and evening for a week. Store the finished product in a glass jar on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator. Subject to the storage rules, it can be used throughout the year. You can add not only aloe to the composition, but also Kalanchoe.
Many folk remedies for pharyngitis include St. John's wort
To quickly stop the signs of the disease, especially at the initial stage, a combination of St. John's wort and propolis can be used. Cooking recipe: one tablespoon of dried St. John's wort flowers is poured with 200 ml of boiling water and placed in a water bath for a quarter of an hour. After the broth has cooled to a comfortable temperature, filter it and add one tablespoon of propolis tincture. Apply a throat rinse twice a day. The effect of its use is usually visible after the first procedure.
With pharyngitis, the use of sea buckthorn honey is effective
In the chronic form of the disease, the use of sea buckthorn honey is effective. For its preparation, one glass of fresh sea buckthorn berries is kneaded and mixed with the same amount of honey. The product is left in a dark place for 7 days, after which it is rubbed through a sieve and placed in a glass jar. Store the medicine in the refrigerator. For treatment, it is necessary to dissolve one teaspoon of honey three times a day after meals. The duration of therapy is up to two weeks.
Inhalation
Pharyngitis treatment usually includes inhalation. The procedure helps to relieve the condition, helps to reduce inflammation and moisturize the mucous membranes of the pharynx.
For inhalation, a special device can be used - a warm-humid inhaler
At home, you can carry out steam inhalation by covering yourself with a blanket over a kettle or saucepan with a hot solution. Often a special device is used for the procedure - a warm-humid inhaler.
For pharyngitis, in most cases, the following solutions for inhalation are used:
- soda solution. You can prepare a solution yourself - 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda per 200 ml of water. Alkaline mineral water is also used (Borjomi, Essentuki);
- saline solution. It can be a saline solution or a prepared product (200 ml of boiling water is dissolved in one teaspoon of sea or table salt);
- decoctions and infusions of medicinal herbs. Means that are used for rinsing the throat can also be used for inhalation;
- water with essential oils. To prepare a solution in 200 ml of hot water, add a few drops of eucalyptus, tea tree, sage, oregano, pine or fir oil.
Inhalation must be carried out with caution, since there is a risk of developing a burn of the mucous membranes of the pharynx, which will lead to an increase in symptoms. With an increase in body temperature, procedures should not be carried out.
Contraindications
The use of alternative methods of treating pharyngitis should be abandoned in the following cases:
- the symptoms of the disease are pronounced, there is a severe sore throat and high fever;
- signs of illness after 3 days of treatment do not disappear, but begin to intensify;
- the presence of serious concomitant diseases or severe impairment of kidney or liver function;
- hypersensitivity to the components that make up traditional medicine.
Pregnant and lactating women should consult a doctor before using traditional medicine. Also, with caution and only in agreement with the pediatrician, they should be used in children.
Traditional methods of treating pharyngitis will help to quickly relieve the patient's condition. However, it should be borne in mind that with an incorrectly selected therapy, complications may develop or the disease may become chronic. Therefore, when identifying symptoms of the disease, it is necessary to seek advice from an otolaryngologist.
