Compared to other deep sea fish, the grenadier is actually quite large. Adults reach a length of 2 meters and weigh up to 30 kg. The maximum fish age, officially registered, was 56 years, but scientists are confident that the fish can live longer.

Grenadier reproduces by throwing eggs, and reaches sexual maturity at the age of five years. The peculiarity of fish life is that females and males live separately from each other. Females, as a rule, live at a depth of 300-700 meters, and males even deeper.

Spawning continues throughout the year, but is most active in the autumn-winter period. A sexually mature female grenadier contains up to 400 thousand eggs with a diameter of up to 1.5 mm.

Young individuals, as a rule, stay close to the surface, at a depth of no more than 500 m. As they mature, the fish goes deeper and deeper under the water, sinking to a depth of 3500 meters or even more.

The fish has a serpentine body and a large head. The dorsal fin is long and has 5-7 rays, while the caudal fin has 130 rays. The pectoral fins of the grenadier are small. There is one row of teeth on the lower jaw, and two on the upper. The fish have small scales, sometimes with a small number of medium-sized pork fat. The body has a monochromatic color, usually gray-brown. The lateral line is darker in color and clearly visible.

Macrurus is a predatory fish and feeds mainly on other fish, cephalopods and molluscs. Sometimes crabs, echinoderms, comb jellies and worms were found in the bodies of the caught fish. This nature of the food suggests that the grenadier does not lure prey, but hunts on its own.

Outwardly, the grenadier resembles ancient sea monsters that existed before our era. Its often intimidating appearance with its large head, sharp teeth and bulging eyes will turn off shoppers who prefer to buy something more familiar to their eyes. And in vain, since the benefits of grenadier are one of the highest among marine fish. And when cooked properly, grenadier can be a delicious gourmet dish.
