Ferlatum is a drug that compensates for the lack of iron in the body.
Composition and form of release
Ferlatum is produced in the form of a transparent brown solution for oral administration with a pleasant odor. One bottle (15 ml) contains 800 mg of iron protein succinylate.
Additional substances: cherry flavor, sodium methyl parahydroxybenzoate, sorbitol, sodium saccharin, purified water, propylene glycol, sodium propyl parahydroxybenzoate.
In polyethylene bottles of 15 ml.

Pharmacological action of Ferlatum
According to the instructions Ferlatum has antianemic action. The active ingredient of the drug is iron protein succinylate, which is a complex compound where the atoms of 3-ferrous iron are surrounded by a semi-synthetic protein carrier, which does not damage the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract.
The main function of iron is to deliver oxygen to tissues. Iron is a part of myoglobin, hemoglobin, iron-containing cytochorm enzymes, is responsible for the transport of electrons, acts as a catalyst for oxidation reactions, is responsible for hydroxylation and other metabolic processes.
Indications for the use of Ferlatum
According to the instructions, Ferlatum is shown in the following cases:
- prevention of iron deficiency during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with prolonged bleeding, during the period of active growth of the body, as well as against the background of unbalanced and malnutrition;
- treatment of clinically expressed and latent iron deficiency (iron deficiency anemia).
Method of application of Ferlatum and dosage regimen
According to the instructions Ferlatum is intended for oral administration before or after meals.
Adults are prescribed a drug or an analogue of Ferlatum at a dosage of 15-30 ml per day, divided into two doses.
For children, the dosage is prescribed on the basis of 1.5 ml for each kg of weight per day, divided into two doses.
During pregnancy, the drug is prescribed at a dosage of 15 ml per day.
After normalization of hemoglobin and serum iron in the body, therapy should be continued for another 2-3 months.
Side effects of Ferlatum
According to reviews, Ferlatum can cause the following side effects from the digestive system:
- constipation or diarrhea;
- epigastric pain;
- nausea.
Most often, symptoms disappear after discontinuation or reduction of the dosage of the drug.
Contraindications
The drug is contraindicated in:
- chronic pancreatitis;
- hemochromatosis;
- hypersensitivity;
- non-malignant anemia (megaloblastic or hemolytic anemia);
- cirrhosis of the liver;
- violation of iron utilization (sideroachrestic or lead anemia).
Overdose
An overdose of Ferlatum according to reviews causes the following symptoms: epigastric pain, vomiting and nausea, diarrhea in the first eight hours after taking the drug. In some cases, drowsiness and pallor of the skin may occur. Development of shock and coma is possible.
In case of an overdose, it is necessary to wash the stomach and carry out symptomatic treatment.
Storage conditions
The drug is stored in a dry place at room temperature for no longer than 24 months.
