Efferalgan is a drug belonging to the group of analgesics-antipyretics.
pharmachologic effect
Efferalgan is a non-narcotic analgesic that also has an antipyretic effect. Its therapeutic action is based on the mechanism of blocking COX1 and COX2 in the central nervous system, with a subsequent effect on the centers of thermoregulation and pain.
The lack of anti-inflammatory effect is explained by the neutralization of the effect of paracetamol on COX. Neutralization is carried out by cellular peroxidases in inflamed tissues.
The drug does not adversely affect the water-salt balance (does not retain water and Na +) and the gastrointestinal mucosa due to the fact that Efferalgan does not block the synthesis of prostaglandins in peripheral tissues.
Form of release of Efferalgan
For the convenience of using Efferalgan, there are various forms of drug release:
- A syrup with a viscous consistency and caramel-vanilla aroma. The color of the syrup is yellow-brown. Efferalgan syrup is packaged in 90 ml bottles. The bottle and the supplied measuring spoon are placed in a cardboard box;
- White suppositories for rectal administration. They are distinguished by a smooth glossy surface. Suppositories are packaged in blisters in the amount of 5 pieces. One cardboard box contains 2 packages;
- The tablets are flat and round. The tablets have beveled edges and a notch on one side, and their color is white. Dissolution of tablets in water is accompanied by the active release of gas bubbles. Tablets in the amount of 4 pieces are packed in strips, one box contains 4 or 25 strips;
- Effervescent tablets containing vitamin C. The form of release and appearance is the same as that of conventional Efferalgan tablets. The tablets are packed in tubes of 10 pieces. One carton contains one tube.

Indications for Efferalgan's use
According to the instructions for Efferalgan, the drug is recommended for use in the following cases:
- As an antipyretic agent for influenza, respiratory diseases in an acute form, with post-vaccination reactions, for childhood infections and for other diseases characterized by the appearance of inflammation and an increase in body temperature against the background of infection;
- As a drug with an analgesic effect for pain syndromes of moderate or low intensity (including toothache, headache, muscle pain, pain caused by injuries and burns, neuralgia).
Contraindications
Medical reviews about Efferalgan note the presence of a number of contraindications, the list of which should be familiarized with before using the drug:
- Dysfunction of the liver and / or kidneys in severe forms;
- Deficiency state of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase;
- Various blood diseases;
- Less than one month old;
- Hypersensitivity to any of Efferalgan's components, especially parabens (propyl and methyl parahydroxybenzoate).
It is recommended to use Efferalgan with caution in patients with mild or moderate liver and / or kidney dysfunction, as well as Gilbert's syndrome.
Instructions for the use of Efferalgan
The instruction for Efferalgan prescribes to take the drug inside (unless otherwise indicated) with plenty of water. At least 1 hour, but not more than 2 hours, should elapse between eating and using the medicine.
The dosage varies depending on the age of the patient:
- For adults and adolescents over 12 years old (if their weight exceeds 40 kg), a single dose is 500 mg, the maximum single dose is 1 g. Frequency of use is no more than 4 times a day. The maximum dose per day is 4 g. The duration of treatment should not be more than 5 days - one week;
- Children under 6 months and less than 7 kg, a dose equal to not more than 350 mg Efferalgan per day is prescribed; children under one year old (whose weight is less than 10 kg) - 500 mg; children under 3 years old and weighing less than 15 kg - 750 mg; children under 6 years old and weighing less than 22 kg - 1 g of medicine; up to 9 years old and less than 30 kg - 1.5 g; up to 12 years and less than 40 kg - 2 g of Efferalgan maximum. If the child's age is less than 3 months, but more than 1 month, the doctor prescribes the dosage.
The interval between doses of the medication should be at least 4 hours. The duration of taking Efferalgan without medical advice cannot be more than 3 days (to reduce fever) and no more than 5 days if the drug is used as an analgesic.
Efferalgan should also be administered rectally, focusing on the patient's age: the dosage for adults is 500 mg 1 to 4 times a day, the maximum single dose is 1 g, the daily dose is 4 g. For children from 12 to 15 years, Efferalgan is recommended in the amount of 250-300 mg from 3 to 4 times in one day; children whose age is from 8 to 12 years old should take the drug in the same dosage three times a day; from 6-8 years, the required dosage is the same, the frequency is reduced to 2-3 times; from 4 to 6 years old - 150 mg 3-4 times a day; for children from 2 to 4 years old, the dose is the same, the frequency is up to 3 times; from one to two years - 80 mg 3 or 4 times a day; from six months to a year - the same dosage with a frequency of 2-3 times; from 3 months to six months, take 80 mg no more than 2 times daily.
Side effects of Efferalgan
The use of Efferalgan can lead to the appearance of undesirable reactions. They are described below:
- Allergic reactions in the form of Quincke's edema, itching, skin rash;
- Vomiting, nausea, pain and pain in the abdomen, hepatotoxic effects;
- Leukopenia, anemia, agranulocytosis, pancytopenia, methemoglobinemia, thrombocytopenia;
- The nephrotoxic effect that occurs with prolonged use of Efferalgan in high doses.
