Protargol is a drug for local use in otolaryngology, urology, ophthalmology, gynecology; has an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, astringent effect, has an immunostimulating effect.
Release form and composition
Dosage form - solution for topical application 2%: transparent opalescent liquid from dark brown to light brown color (the solution is made in laboratories at pharmacies from a water-soluble substance).
Active ingredient: silver proteinate (7.8-8.3% silver), in 1 ml of solution - 20 mg.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
When silver proteinate enters the body, it dissociates with the formation of silver ions, which have astringent, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects. Silver ions actively inhibit the reproduction of pathogens of infectious diseases by binding their DNA. The mechanism of action of the drug is based on the deposition of proteins on damaged mucous membranes by means of silver ions and the formation of a protective film. At the same time, the inflammatory process decreases, the blood vessels narrow, which helps to eliminate puffiness, and sensitivity decreases. Silver ions also inhibit the multiplication of various microorganisms. Protargol demonstrates activity against such gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria as S. abony, B. cereus, A. niger, C. albicans, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, E. coli, etc.
Pharmacokinetics
Protargol is used only topically, therefore, silver proteinate is absorbed slightly. Cases of silver poisoning and manifestations of systemic effects when using the drug in clinical practice have not been registered.
Indications for use
According to the instructions, Protargol is indicated for the treatment of inflammatory processes:
- Otolaryngology: acute and chronic nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nasopharyngeal mucosa), sinusitis, pharyngitis, chronic rhinitis, sinusitis, adenoiditis, purulent inflammation of the middle ear;
- Ophthalmology: inflammatory eye pathologies, including blepharitis in newborns, conjunctivitis;
- Gynecology: cervical erosion, endometritis, vaginitis, cervicitis, adnexitis, salpingitis, etc.;
- Urology: urethritis, cystitis.
In addition, the use of the drug is indicated in the diagnosis of the patency of the lacrimal passages.
Contraindications

Instructions for the use of Protargol: method and dosage
The solution is intended for topical use.
In the treatment of urological diseases, the solution is lubricated and washed with the mucous membrane of the urethra and bladder, used for tamponade of the urethra, instillations.
In gynecological practice, Protargol is used in the form of tamponades and douching.
Recommended dosage:
- Inflammatory diseases of the ear, throat and nose: for patients over 6 years old - 2-3 drops or 1-2 irrigation of each nasal passage 3 times a day; children from 0 to 6 years old - 1-2 drops in each nasal passage 3 times a day. Duration of treatment is 7 days;
- Otitis media: adults and children - 3-5 drops into the ear opening 3 times a day for 7 days;
- Ophthalmology: adults and children - into the conjunctival sac, 2-3 drops 3 times a day, the course of therapy is 7 days.

The use of Protargol can cause burning, itching, slight irritation, and allergic reactions.
