Thrombin is a local hemostatic drug.
Release form and composition
The dosage form of Thrombin is a lyophilisate for preparing a solution for external and local use: a loose mass of white or slightly pinkish color (in 10 ml ampoules, 10 ampoules in a cardboard box complete with an ampoule knife).
Active ingredient in 1 ampoule: thrombin - 125 IU (international units).
Indications for use
- surgical interventions on parenchymal organs (spleen, liver, kidneys, lungs, etc.);
- nose, gingival and other capillary bleeding, especially with Werlhof's disease, hypoplastic / aplastic anemia, hemophilia.
Thrombin is also used to study the blood coagulation system in laboratory practice.
Contraindications
- bleeding from large vessels;
- individual intolerance to the components of the drug.
Method of administration and dosage
Thrombin is for local and external use only.
The contents of the ampoule must first be dissolved in 10 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride solution. The resulting solution can be opalescent, transparent. The presence of suspended solids in it is not a contraindication for use.
To stop bleeding (parenchymal or superficial) with a Thrombin solution, it is necessary to soak a sterile hemostatic sponge, which is then applied to the bleeding wound. The sponge soaked in the solution can be left on the wound as it will dissolve later.
In the absence of a sponge, it is possible to use a sterile gauze swab, after stopping the bleeding, it is removed.

Intramuscular / intravenous administration of the solution is unacceptable, as it can lead to widespread vascular thrombosis with a possible fatal outcome.
