Terpincod is a phenanthrene alkaloid; an opioid receptor agonist that reduces the excitability of the cough center; combined antitussive agent of central action with expectorant properties.
Release form and composition
Dosage form - tablets: flat-cylindrical, white (slight marbling is possible), with a line and a chamfer (10 pcs. In blisters, 1 package in a cardboard box).
Active ingredients in 1 tablet:
- sodium bicarbonate - 250 mg;
- terpinhydrate - 250 mg;
- codeine - 8 mg.
Additional components: stearic acid, talc, potato starch.
Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
Terpinkod is a combined multicomponent drug.
The Terpinkoda contains codeine, which is a central antitussive agent and phenanthrene alkaloids. As an agonist of opioid receptors, the substance reduces the excitability of the cough center. The use of the drug in the recommended therapeutic doses does not lead to depression of the respiratory center, does not suppress the production of bronchial secretions and does not disrupt the function of the ciliated epithelium. Codeine enhances the effect of hypnotics and sedatives, as well as analgesics. When taken in the intestine, opioid receptors are activated, which weakens peristalsis and spasm of all sphincters and promotes relaxation of smooth muscles.
For terpinhydrate, an expectorant effect is characteristic, it also increases the secretion of the bronchial glands.
Sodium bicarbonate makes the pH of bronchial mucus more alkaline, eliminates excessive viscosity of sputum, and also to some extent stimulates the motor function of bronchioles and ciliated epithelium.
The drug minimizes the cough reflex and facilitates the removal of mucus from the airways during coughing. The maximum effect of the drug on the body is noted 30-60 minutes after oral administration and lasts for 2-6 hours.
Indications for use
Terpinkod is used to treat dry cough of various etiology in diseases of the respiratory tract and lungs, including bronchitis, bronchopneumonia, pulmonary emphysema.
Contraindications
- bronchial asthma;
- respiratory failure;
- children under 12 years old;
- period of pregnancy and lactation;
- the simultaneous use of narcotic analgesics or ethanol;
- hypersensitivity to any component of the drug.

Side effects

- from the central nervous system: drowsiness, headache;
- allergic reactions: urticaria, pruritus;
- others: with long-term treatment - addiction to codeine.
In case of an overdose, the following symptoms develop: drowsiness, vomiting, bradycardia, arrhythmias, impaired coordination of eyeball movements with visual impairment, depression of the respiratory center, bradypnea, bladder atony.
Overdose
Overdose signs are:
- bradycardia;
- arrhythmias;
- drowsiness;
- deterioration in coordination of eyeball movements with visual impairment;
- vomiting;
- atony of the bladder;
- oppression of the respiratory center;
- bradypnea.
When treating an overdose, the stomach is washed with potassium permanganate and activated charcoal and naloxone (a competitive physiological antagonist of codeine), atropine and respiratory analeptics are administered.
special instructions
In case of impaired renal function, the excretion of codeine slows down, therefore, this group of patients is recommended to increase the intervals between doses.
During treatment, alcohol is prohibited.
Athletes should keep in mind that the drug is doping, since it contains codeine.
Terpincod can have a sedative effect that affects the speed of reactions and the ability to concentrate. In this regard, during the period of therapy, it is recommended to refrain from driving and performing work with potentially dangerous mechanisms.
Drug interactions
Medicines that depress the central nervous system can enhance the sedative effect of Terpinkod and its depressing effect on the respiratory center.
Absorbent, coating, and astringent preparations can reduce the absorption of codeine.
Chloramphenicol inhibits the metabolism of codeine in the liver, thereby enhancing its effect.
Codeine increases the effect of ethanol on psychomotor functions. Used in high doses, codeine can enhance the effect of cardiac glycosides (such as digoxin).
Analogs
The analogues of Terpinkoda are: Terkodin, Codterpin, Codelak, Codelak Fito.
