Iodinol is an external preparation with antiseptic action.
Release form and composition
Iodinol is produced in the form of a solution for local and external use: a dark blue liquid, foaming when shaken, with a characteristic odor; on the unfilled part of the bottle, traces of foaming are allowed (25, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, 250, 500, 1000 ml each in bottles with a spray nozzle or without it, 1 bottle in a cardboard box).
The composition of 1 liter of solution includes:
- Active substance: iodine - 1 g;
- Auxiliary components: polyvinyl alcohol - 9 g, potassium iodide - 3 g, purified water - up to 1 liter.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Iodinol is an iodine-containing antiseptic. The main active ingredient is molecular iodine, which has an antiseptic effect; low toxicity.
Iodine, when applied to large areas of the skin, exhibits the following resorptive effect: it enhances the processes of dissimilation, actively affects the metabolism, takes part in the synthesis of thyroxine, and has proteolytic properties.
Polyvinyl alcohol is a high molecular weight compound. Due to its content in the composition of the drug, the release of iodine slows down, its interaction with the tissues of the body is lengthened, and the irritating effect of iodine on the tissues is reduced.
Iodine as a bactericidal agent acts on gram-positive and gram-negative flora (it is most active against streptococcal flora and Escherichia coli), as well as on yeast and pathogenic fungi. Staphylococcus aureus is a more stable flora, however, during a long course, staphylococcal flora is suppressed in 80% of cases. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is resistant to the action of the drug.
Indications for use
- Purulent surgical diseases;
- Purulent otitis media;
- Chronic tonsillitis;
- Chronic atrophic rhinitis;
- Chronic periodontitis;
- Ulcers (varicose and trophic);
- Purulent wounds;
- Burns (thermal and chemical).
Contraindications
- Dermatitis herpetiformis;
- Thyrotoxicosis;
- Perforation of the tympanic membrane (when the solution is instilled into the ear);
- Pregnancy and lactation;
- Hypersensitivity to drug components.
According to the instructions, Iodinol is used with caution in patients under 18 years of age.
Instructions for the use of Iodinol: method and dosage
Iodinol is used topically and externally.
The scheme of drug use is determined by the indications:
- Chronic tonsillitis: the supratonsillar space and lacunae of the tonsils are washed with 50 ml of the solution; course - 4-5 washings with an interval of 2-3 days;
- Purulent otitis media: 5-8 drops of the drug are instilled daily into the ear (ears); course - 14-28 days;
- trophic rhinitis: 2-3 times a week inhaled into the pharynx and nasal cavity (after preliminary softening and removal of crusts); course - 2-3 months;
- Chronic periodontitis: rinse the mouth with Iodinol 3 times a day after meals, 15 ml of solution;
- Trophic and varicose ulcers, purulent wound surfaces and infected burns, purulent fistulas: apply loose gauze dressings soaked in solution.
Side effects
With prolonged use of the drug, the development of iodism is possible.
Overdose
The main symptoms are:
- local / external use: the phenomenon of iodism, manifested in the form of edema of the mucous membranes, skin rashes, lacrimation, rhinitis, rhinorrhea, hypersalivation, bronchorrhea;
- ingestion: tachycardia, increased sweating, hypersalivation, edema of the larynx and mucous membranes of the nasopharynx, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea.
Therapy:
- local / external use: withdrawal of Iodinol, symptomatic treatment;
- ingestion: gastric lavage (first of all, with 1% sodium thiosulfate solution, followed by water); symptomatic treatment.
special instructions
The drug should be used only in stationary conditions.
Avoid getting the drug in the eyes. When using Iodinol for rinsing, it is forbidden to swallow the solution.
Temperatures above 40 ° C and light accelerate the decomposition of active iodine. Discoloration of the solution indicates a decrease in the effectiveness of the drug due to the destruction of the complex with the transition of active iodine to iodide ion.
The diluted solution (should have a dark brown color) is not subject to long-term storage.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
Iodinol is not prescribed during pregnancy / lactation.
Pediatric use
Drug therapy for patients under 18 years of age is prescribed under medical supervision.
Drug interactions
Iodinol is pharmaceutically incompatible with ammonia solutions, essential oils, white sedimentary mercury. An acidic or alkaline environment, the presence of blood, pus and fat weaken its antiseptic activity.
Analogs
Analogues of Iodinol are: Iodine, Iodopiron.
Terms and conditions of storage
Store in a dark place, out of reach of children, at a temperature not exceeding 25 ° C. Do not freeze.
