European zyuznik (Lycopus europaeus) belongs to the Lamiaceae family, other names: heart grass, marsh nettle, wolf's paw, wolf's leg, chisel, hemp forest, zyuzik. A perennial herbaceous medicinal plant with unique healing properties, its aerial parts are used in folk medicine: leaves, flowers, stems.
Chemical composition
The stems, leaves and flowers of the European cinquefoil contain biologically active substances: bitterness, resins, cardiac glycosides, lycopene, essential oils, tannins, carotene, vitamin C, antioxidants. The plant contains microscopic amounts of manganese and fluoride. The medicinal value of zyuznik is increased by derivatives of organic acids (coffee, cinnamon, rosemary), bioflavonoids and tannins. To have a positive effect on the body, a balanced natural composition of the active components that make up the plant is important.
Beneficial features
European zyuznik is used in folk medicine as one of the means that have a positive effect on the endocrine system, in particular, regulating the thyroid gland.
Although the plant is not included in the State Pharmacopoeia of the Russian Federation and has not yet found use in official medicine, due to its many healing properties in traditional medicine, it is used for severe pain in the stomach, heart problems, as a good sedative, and also for the treatment of thyroid diseases.
In the countries of the European Union, zyuznik is used in the production of several drugs prescribed for cardiac neuroses and other disorders of the heart caused by hyperfunction of the thyroid gland. In addition, plant preparations help with neuro-vegetative disorders, accompanied by symptoms of hyperthyroidism, but occurring without dysfunction of the thyroid gland; they are also prescribed in gynecology for the treatment of hormonal disorders associated with hyperthyroidism (mastopathy, menstrual irregularities, mastodynia).
Indications for use
In case of hyperthyroidism, lithospermic acid, which is part of the extract of the European zyuznik, reduces the excitability of the thyroid gland; having a normalizing effect on iodine metabolism, it reduces the excess production of thyroxine and other thyroid hormones. Its use is very mild, but noticeably reduces agitation and hyperhidrosis, reduces heart rate and nervousness, soothes eyelid tremors and tremors in the body, improves mood and increases performance. As a means of treating endocrine pathologies in case of thyroid dysfunction, the raw materials of the European zyuznik are most often used in homeopathy. The well-being of patients due to taking drugs usually improves after 2 weeks of use.
With Graves' disease, palpitations, cardiac arrhythmias (extrasystoles), endocarditis, neuroses and disorders of the nervous system, insomnia, an unreasonable feeling of fear, Zyuznik's drugs affect the excitability of the heart muscle, slow down the pulse, making it more even and deep. Its action is similar to that of quinidine (an alkaloid secreted from the bark of the cinchona tree). A distinctive feature of the funds based on the European zyuznik is the impossibility of exceeding their dosage, which is very important for debilitated patients with hyperthyroidism. The effectiveness of the zyuznik in combination with the motherwort is increased.
In folk medicine, European zyuznik is also used for other hormonal disorders, for the treatment of diseases accompanied by high fever, intoxication, and a lingering cough. Its extracts have a positive effect on the composition of the blood, due to the content of hemostatic substances, they also help with bleeding.
When adding zyuznik to multicomponent fees, it is necessary to take into account its property to reduce pressure and a diuretic effect, thanks to which the plant is also used as a decongestant.
Contraindications
Despite the proven absence of toxicity of the European zyuznik, it is recommended to take it under medical supervision. It is contraindicated to take plant preparations for pregnant and lactating women, children, as well as with diffuse goiter, hypothyroidism or hypotension. It should be borne in mind that therapy with zyuznik drugs can affect the results of diagnostic tests, especially in the case of using radioactive isotopes (for example, when mapping the thyroid gland).
Sufficiently prolonged use or excessive dosage can adversely affect the function of the pancreas. Regular long-term use of infusions and decoctions in excessive quantities can also lead to diabetes.
Home remedies from the European zyuznik
- infusion (1): 2-3 tablespoons of herbs pour 200 ml of boiling water, insist, filter; with hyperthyroidism, take ½ cup 3 times a day half an hour before meals;
- infusion (2): 10 g of dry grass is crushed, poured with 1 glass of boiling water, insisted in warm for 2 hours, filtered; with vegetative-vascular dystonia, palpitations, unpleasant sensations in the region of the heart, take for a long time: ¼ glasses of infusion 3-4 times a day 20 minutes before meals; every 3 weeks you need to take a week break;
- tea: 4 g of dry herbs are poured in 250 ml of boiling water, infused for 10 minutes, filtered; with cardiac neuroses, warm and unsweetened tea is drunk in small sips, 1 glass 2 times a day for several weeks;
- vodka tincture: dry zyuznik is crushed, poured with vodka in a ratio of 1: 5, placed in a warm place without access to light for 13-15 days, filtered; with an increased heart rate (tachycardia), take 20-30 drops every 4-5 hours during the day until a positive effect is obtained (reduction and stabilization of the heart rate).
