  • Rectal suppositories (3 or 5 pcs. In blisters, 2 blisters in a carton box).

The main active ingredient is bisacodyl:

  • 1 tablet - 5 mg;
  • 1 suppository - 10 mg.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Bisacodyl is a diphenylmethane derivative. It has a laxative effect by increasing the secretion of mucus in the large intestine, as well as accelerating and enhancing its peristalsis. This effect is due to direct stimulation of the nerve endings located in the mucous membrane of the colon.

Pharmacokinetics

The drug is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Bisacodyl is a prodrug, from which, in the process of hydrolysis in an alkaline medium, a substance is formed, which also irritates the mucous membrane of the large intestine.

Indications for use

Bisacodyl is prescribed for constipation caused by sluggish peristalsis and hypotension of the large intestine. In addition, the drug is used for bowel emptying before endoscopic and X-ray examinations, as well as in the pre- and postoperative period.

Contraindications

According to the instructions, Bisacodyl is contraindicated in case of intestinal obstruction, inflammatory diseases of the abdominal organs in an acute form, with uterine bleeding, cystitis, bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract, spastic constipation, acute hemorrhoids and proctitis, in case of violation of the water-electrolyte balance and in case of hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.

Bisacodyl in the form of tablets is not prescribed for children under 6 years old, in the form of rectal suppositories - up to 2 years.

Instructions for the use of Bisacodyl: method and dosage

In the form of tablets, Bisacodyl is taken orally, in the form of suppositories it is used rectally.

For adults, the drug is prescribed 1-3 tablets by mouth (the recommended initial dose is 1 tablet, in the future it is possible to increase the dose to 2-3 tablets) or 1-2 suppositories rectally before bedtime. The usual dosage of Bisacodyl for adults is 5-10 mg at a time.

In preparation for examinations and operations, the drug is prescribed 10-20 mg in the evening by mouth and 10 mg rectally in the morning.

For children, Bisacodyl tablets are prescribed from 6 years old, 1 pc. (With 5 mg) before bed. Rectally the drug is used in pediatrics in the following dosage: children 2-7 years old - ½ suppository, at the age of 8-14 years - 1 suppository at night.

Side effects

The use of Bisacodyl can cause allergic reactions, abdominal pain and diarrhea, due to which, due to imbalance in the water-electrolyte balance, cramps, muscle weakness and arterial hypotension may appear.

Overdose

In case of an overdose of Bisacodyl, severe diarrhea may occur, leading to dehydration. In this case, muscle weakness, cramps, rapid loss of trace elements and pathology of the cardiovascular system are possible.

Treatment is symptomatic, aimed at combating dehydration and restoring electrolyte balance.

Reviews about Bisacodyl

The drug is an effective laxative. According to reviews, Bisacodyl helps to cope with the problem of constipation quickly enough. The laxative effect develops within 10-15 minutes after taking the tablets or the introduction of a suppository. Even one suppository is enough for active bowel movement. It is recommended to start taking pills with a minimum dose, since the remedy is potent.

With the uncontrolled use of Bisacodyl in doses exceeding the recommended ones, dehydration, dysbiosis, electrolyte imbalance and intestinal atony develop, which leads to the inability of the intestine to natural emptying (constant artificial stimulation of peristalsis is required). Such serious side effects have occurred with the incorrect use of Bisacodyl for the purpose of losing weight.

Price for Bisacodyl in pharmacies

The laxative is inexpensive and readily available. The price of Bisacodyl from various manufacturers varies slightly. So, 5 mg tablets (30 pcs. In a package) can be purchased at a price of 23 to 32 rubles, and rectal suppositories 10 mg (10 pcs. In a package) - at a price of about 40 rubles.
