Beta-carotene is a provitamin A with pronounced antioxidant, as well as immunostimulating and adaptogenic properties.
Release form and composition
Beta-carotene is available in the following dosage forms:
- Dragee 2.5 mg;
- 10 mg capsules;
- Tablets of 0.4 mg.
Indications for use
Due to its pronounced antioxidant properties, Beta-carotene protects cells from damage by free radicals and active oxygen. It participates in the process of renewal of epithelial tissues, protecting the skin from the harmful effects of UV rays, promotes the growth and regeneration of bone tissue.
In addition, Beta-carotene increases the adaptive capacity of the body and its resistance to stress. Also, partially converted to retinol (vitamin A), it helps to normalize metabolism, has a positive effect on the state of the organs of vision (ensures the transition of opsin to rhodopsin - a pigment that provides night vision), skin and mucous membranes.
Beta-carotene can be taken seasonally and constantly by people of all age groups:
- With an insufficient amount of vitamin A in the body;
- To increase immunity, especially during epidemics of influenza and respiratory infections or with increased stress;
- To neutralize the effects of aggressive environmental factors.
Contraindications
The use of Beta-carotene is contraindicated in case of individual intolerance to the components of the drug.
Method of administration and dosage
When using Beta-carotene for medicinal purposes, the dose and duration of therapy is determined by the doctor depending on the patient's condition or the degree of the disease.
For prophylaxis, adults and children from 4 years of age are usually prescribed 0.01-0.03 g of Beta-carotene daily (during or after meals). According to the indications, the doctor may increase the dosage to 0.065 g per day.
Pregnant women are usually prescribed 0.01 g per day.
The drug is taken daily for a long time.
Side effects
The use of beta-carotene usually does not lead to the development of side effects. With hypersensitivity, allergic reactions and carotenoderma may occur.
With a significant overdose of the drug and the development of hypervitaminosis A, headache, dizziness, weakness, anxiety, double vision, dyspeptic disorders, skin rashes, dry lips, pain in bones and joints, as well as decreased appetite, ulceration of the skin and mucous membranes may occur.
