Naphthyzine is a local vasoconstrictor drug used in ENT practice.
Release form and composition
Naphthyzin is available in two dosage forms:
- Nasal drops: transparent, colorless or slightly colored (5 or 10 ml in glass bottles, 1 bottle in a cardboard box; 10, 15 or 20 ml in plastic dropper bottles, 1 dropper bottle in a cardboard box, complete with dropper cap or without it);
- Nasal spray: clear, colorless or slightly colored liquid (10 or 15 ml each in polymer dropper bottles, hermetically sealed with polymer dropper stoppers and screw caps, 1 dropper bottle each in a cardboard box, complete with a tube).
The composition of 1 ml drops and nasal spray includes:
- Active ingredient: naphazoline - 0.5 or 1 mg;
- Auxiliary components: boric acid - 20 mg, purified water - up to 1 ml.
Indications for use
- Sinusitis;
- Acute rhinitis;
- Allergic rhinitis;
- Eustachite.
Naphthyzin is also used to facilitate the examination of the nasal cavity (rhinoscopy).
Contraindications
- Severe atherosclerosis;
- Arterial hypertension;
- Chronic rhinitis, including atrophic rhinitis;
- Severe eye diseases, including angle-closure glaucoma;
- Hyperthyroidism (thyrotoxicosis);
- Tachycardia;
- Diabetes;
- Simultaneous use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors and up to 2 weeks after the end of their use;
- Age up to 18 years (for 0.1% drops), up to 15 years (for 0.1% spray), up to 2 years (for 0.05% spray), up to 1 year (for 0.05% drops);
- Hypersensitivity to drug components.
Naphthyzine in the form of a spray should be used with caution in patients with ischemic heart disease (angina pectoris), prostatic hyperplasia and pheochromocytoma.
For lactating and pregnant women, Naphthyzine in any dosage form can be used only in cases where the expected health benefits to the mother are higher than the potential risk to the child or fetus.
Method of administration and dosage
In otorhinolaryngology, Naphthyzin is used intranasally.
The dosage regimen is determined by age (in each nasal passage):
- Adults and children from 15 years old: 3-4 times a day, 1-3 drops or 1 injection of a spray (0.05-0.1% solution);
- Children 6-15 years old: 1-3 times a day, 2 drops or 1 injection of a spray (0.05% solution);
- Children 1-6 years old (for drops) and 2-6 years old (for spray): 1-3 times a day, 1-2 drops or 1 spray of a spray (0.05% solution).
For children, 0.05% Naphthyzin spray can be diluted with distilled water in a 1: 1 ratio (up to 0.025%). The dosage regimen should not be changed.
The course of treatment for rhinitis should not exceed 5-7 days in adults, and 3 days in children.
For diagnostic purposes, the drug is used after cleaning the nose. 3-4 drops should be dripped into each nasal passage, or 1 injection should be made, or a tampon soaked in a 0.05% solution of the drug should be introduced for 1-2 minutes.
Side effects
During the use of Naphthyzin, side effects may occur in the form of headache, nausea, tachycardia, reactive hyperemia, increased blood pressure, swelling of the nasal mucosa.
If therapy lasts more than 1 week, local reactions may develop in the form of edema of the nasal mucosa and atrophic rhinitis.
special instructions
Naphthyzine can have a resorptive effect.
With prolonged therapy, the severity of the vasoconstrictor action gradually decreases (the phenomenon of tachyphylaxis), therefore, after 5-7 days of use, it is recommended to take a break for several days.
Drug interactions
The simultaneous appointment of Naphthyzinum with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (including the period up to 2 weeks after the end of their use) is contraindicated.
Naphthyzine slows down the absorption of local anesthetic drugs (lengthening their action during surface anesthesia).
When combined with other vasoconstrictor drugs, the risk of side effects increases.
Analogs
Naphazoline analogues are: Naphazoline, Naphazoline Bufus, Naphazoline-Ferein, Naphazol-Hemofarm, Sanorin, Sanorin with eucalyptus oil.
Terms and conditions of storage
Store in a dark place, out of reach of children, at temperatures up to 25 ° C, do not freeze.
The shelf life is 3 years.
After opening, Naphtizin in a dropper bottle can be used for 30 days.
