Xylometazoline is a local vasoconstrictor used in ENT practice.

Release form and composition

  • Nasal spray 0.05% and 0.1%: colorless or slightly colored liquid with a characteristic odor of eucalyptus oil (in bottles equipped with a spray, 10 or 20 ml each, 1 bottle in a cardboard box);
  • Nasal drops 0.05% and 0.1%: transparent, with a slight yellowish tinge or colorless solution (in polymer bottles or polymer bottles with a dispenser of 10, 15 or 25 ml, in a cardboard box 1 bottle).

Active ingredient: xylometazoline hydrochloride, in 1 ml spray and 1 ml drops - 0.5 or 1 mg.

Excipients of the spray: disodium edetate dihydrate, sodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate, sorbitol, glycerol, macrogol glyceryl hydroxystearate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, sodium chloride, purified water, benzalkonium chloride, eucalyptus oil.

Excipients of drops: sodium chloride, disodium edetate, sodium hydrogen phosphate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, purified water, benzalkonium chloride.

Indications for use

  • Acute respiratory diseases (ARI), accompanied by symptoms of rhinitis;
  • Acute allergic rhinitis, hay fever, sinusitis;
  • Otitis media (to reduce swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, used as part of complex therapy).

Xylometazoline is also used to prepare patients for diagnostic manipulations (rhinoscopy).

Contraindications

Absolute:

  • Severe atherosclerosis;
  • Glaucoma;
  • Thyrotoxicosis;
  • Tachycardia;
  • Arterial hypertension;
  • History of surgical interventions on the meninges;
  • Atrophic rhinitis;
  • Simultaneous use with tricyclic antidepressants or monoamine oxidase inhibitors;
  • Children under 2 years of age (for spray), up to 6 years (for drops and spray 0.1%).

Relative (diseases / conditions in which Xylometazoline should be used with extreme caution due to the existing risk of complications):

  • Ischemic heart disease (angina pectoris III-IV functional class);
  • Diabetes;
  • BPH;
  • Pregnancy;
  • Children under 2 years of age (for 0.05% drops);
  • Lactation.

Method of administration and dosage

Xylometazoline is used intranasally. You must first clear the nasal passages.

Recommended dosage regimens:

  • Adults and children over 6 years old: 1 injection of 0.1% spray or 2-3 drops of 0.1% solution in each nasal passage 2-3 times a day (for spray), up to 4 times (for drops);
  • Children 2-6 years old: 1 injection of 0.05% spray or 1-2 drops of 0.05% solution in each nostril 1-2 times a day;
  • Children under 2 years of age (with caution): 1-2 drops of a 0.05% solution 1-2 times a day.

Frequency rate of application - no more than 3 times a day.

The duration of rhinitis treatment is 5-7 days.

Side effects

With frequent and / or long-term use of Xylometazoline, the following side effects are possible: hypersecretion of mucus, burning, dryness and / or irritation of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, sneezing, paresthesia (feeling of numbness, crawling creeps, tingling sensations).

In rare cases, there are: swelling of the nasal mucosa, tachycardia, insomnia, heart palpitations, increased blood pressure, headache, arrhythmias, visual impairment, vomiting, depression (with prolonged use in high doses).

Do not use the drug for more than 7 days.

Usually Xylometazoline does not adversely affect reaction rate and attention. However, in some cases, with frequent and / or prolonged use, adverse reactions may develop that impair the ability to drive and work with complex mechanisms.

If a dose is missed, the drug can be used only if no more than 1 hour has passed, otherwise you should wait for the next dose. Do not double the dose.

Drug interactions

Xylometazoline should not be used simultaneously with tricyclic antidepressants, as well as monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
