Hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus (hydrocephalia; Greek hydor - liquid, water + Greek kephale - head; synonym: dropsy of the brain) - excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the intrathecal spaces and ventricles of the brain; manifests itself as signs of increased intracranial pressure.

Types of hydrocephalus:

  • resorptive (aresorptiva; a- - negative particle + lat. resorbeo - absorb, absorb) - open hydrocephalus, caused, in most cases, by impaired absorption of cerebrospinal fluid;
  • internal (interna; synonym: ventricular hydrocephalus) - differs in the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid mainly in the ventricles of the brain;
  • congenital (congenita) - occurs during intrauterine development;
  • hypersecretory (hypersecretoria) - open hydrocephalus, mainly with increased production of cerebrospinal fluid;
  • external (externa) - the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid is observed mainly in the intrathecal spaces of the brain;
  • general (generalis) - characterized by the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid both in the intrathecal spaces and in the ventricles of the brain;
  • occlusive (occlusiva; synonym: closed hydrocephalus) - differs in violation of the outflow of cerebrospinal fluid from the ventricles of the brain;
  • acute (acuta) - one of the forms of hydrocephalus, in which cerebrospinal fluid rapidly accumulates in large quantities and intracranial pressure increases; proceeds with vomiting, sharp headaches, bradycardia, in some cases with convulsions and loss of consciousness;
  • open (aperta) - in which the outflow of cerebrospinal fluid into the subarachnoid space remains;
  • acquired (acquisita) - developed in the postnatal period;
  • chronic (chronica) - one of the forms of the course of hydrocephalus, which is characterized by the gradual development of symptoms of the disease.
