Solution for external use 2% Regaine
Solution for external use 2% Regaine

Regaine is a drug for external use that stimulates hair growth in androgenic alopecia.

Release form and composition

Regain's dosage form - solution for external use 2% and 5%: transparent, light yellow or colorless (60 ml each in high-density polyethylene bottles, in a cardboard box 1 bottle and 3 nozzles: a spray bottle, an extended spray nozzle and a rubbing nozzle).

Active ingredient: minoxidil, in 1 ml - 20 or 50 mg.

Auxiliary components: propylene glycol, ethanol, purified water.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

When applied topically, minoxidil stimulates hair growth in patients with androgenetic alopecia (baldness, thinning hair). After the start of treatment, increased hair growth is observed after 4 months or more. The onset of action of the drug and the severity of the effect may vary on an individual basis.

A 5% solution stimulates hair growth more than a 2% solution, as evidenced by an increase in vellus hair growth. After the cancellation of Regaine, the growth of new hair is suspended, which can lead to a return to the original appearance of the patient after 3-4 months. The exact mechanism of action of Regaine in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia is not well understood.

Pharmacokinetics

When applied externally, absorption of minoxidil through normal skin without damage is minimized. On average, less than 1.5% (the range of variation is 0.3‒4.5%) of the total amount of the applied drug penetrates into the systemic circulation. The effect of concomitant skin diseases on the absorption of minoxidil is not well understood.

After discontinuation of Regain, approximately 95% of the minoxidil circulating in the systemic circulation is excreted within 4 days. The pharmacokinetic profile of the biotransformation of minoxidil, which is involved in metabolic processes, with external use of Regaine has not been sufficiently studied at the moment.

There is no plasma protein binding of minoxidil. It is excreted in the urine by glomerular filtration. The substance does not cross the blood-brain barrier.

Minoxidil and its metabolites are excreted from the body through hemodialysis, mainly through the kidneys.

Indications for use

According to the instructions, Regein is a drug for the treatment of androgenic alopecia in men and women (restores hairline and stabilizes the process of hair loss).

Contraindications

  • Dermatosis of the scalp;
  • Violation of the integrity of the scalp;
  • Age under 18 and over 65;
  • Hypersensitivity to drug components.

Instructions for the use of Regain: method and dosage

Regaine is applied externally to the scalp only (starting from the center of the affected area).

It should be applied 2 times a day, 1 ml, regardless of the size of the treated area.

First, a 2% solution is prescribed. In the absence of satisfactory hair growth, as well as if faster hair growth is required, a 5% solution is prescribed.

In women, Regaine is most effective for hair loss in the middle parting area, in men - on the crown.

The drug should be applied to dry skin. The method of use depends on the applicator used.

The spray is suitable for treating large areas of the scalp. Rules for its application:

  • Remove the large outer cap and inner screw cap from the bottle;
  • Install the spray bottle and screw tight;
  • Remove the transparent cap;
  • Point the head of the spray nozzle to the center of the affected area and press the valve. Using your fingertips, distribute the drug over the entire area of baldness, rubbing lightly into the skin, avoiding inhalation of the aerosol. To apply a dose of 1 ml, this operation must be repeated 6 times;
  • Put a transparent and large outer cap on the bottle;
  • Wash hands thoroughly.

The extended spray nozzle is suitable for applying Regaine to small areas of baldness or for treating the skin under preserved hair. Rules for its application:

  • Install the spray bottle (as described above);
  • Remove the small spray head from it and attach the elongated nozzle to the spray sleeve;
  • Remove the small cap from the end of the nozzle;
  • Direct the nozzle to the center of the balding area and press the spray bottle once. Using your fingertips, distribute the drug over the entire area of baldness, rubbing lightly into the skin, avoiding inhalation of the aerosol. To apply a dose of 1 ml, this operation must be repeated 6 times;
  • Put on the cap;
  • Wash hands thoroughly.

The rubbing nozzle is suitable for applying the product to small bald areas. Rules for its application:

  • Remove the large outer cap and the inner screw cap from the bottle;
  • Install the nozzle on the bottle and screw tightly;
  • Taking the bottle vertically, squeeze it in such a way as to fill the upper chamber with the solution to a black line - this will correspond to one dose (1 ml);
  • Turn the bottle over and massage the entire area of baldness with a nozzle until the solution from the chamber is used;
  • Place the large outer cap on the bottle.

The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor individually. According to the clinical experience of using Regain, the first signs of hair growth stimulation appear no earlier than 4 months later (when using the drug 2 times a day). However, the onset of hair growth, as well as the severity and quality of hair, varies from person to person.

Side effects

Possible local reactions: dermatitis of the scalp; rarely - more pronounced cases of dermatitis (peeling, inflammation, redness), itching of the scalp, alopecia, folliculitis, allergic contact dermatitis, seborrhea, unwanted hair growth.

Possible systemic side effects:

  • From the side of the cardiovascular system: heart palpitations, fluctuations in blood pressure, chest pain, changes in the rhythm of heart contractions, edema;
  • From the respiratory system: allergic rhinitis, shortness of breath;
  • From the central nervous system: vertigo, headache, neuritis;
  • Dermatological reactions: facial edema, nonspecific allergic reactions (urticaria, skin rash).

An explicit causal relationship between the use of Regain and the occurrence of the listed systemic side effects has been established only in relation to dermatological reactions.

Overdose

Accidental oral administration of Regaine can provoke systemic side effects associated with the vasodilating properties of the active ingredient (5 ml of Regaine 2% solution includes 100 mg of minoxidil - the maximum recommended dose for adult patients during the treatment of hypertension; 5 ml of Regaine 5% solution includes 250 mg minoxidil, that is, a dose that is almost 2.5 times the maximum allowable daily dose for adult patients during the treatment of hypertension).

Overdose symptoms include a decrease in blood pressure, tachycardia, and fluid retention. In this case, supportive and symptomatic therapy is prescribed. Diuretics may be needed to eliminate fluid retention. In the treatment of emerging tachycardia, beta-blockers are effective.

For the treatment of hypotension, intravenous administration of 0.9% sodium chloride solution is necessary. It is not recommended to prescribe sympathomimetic drugs, for example, epinephrine and norepinephrine, which are characterized by excessive cardiac stimulating activity.

special instructions

Before prescribing Regain, the patient should undergo a general medical examination, including the collection and study of anamnesis. The scalp must be healthy.

According to isolated reports, within 3-4 months after the end of treatment, it is possible to restore the original appearance of the hair.

Minoxidil is absorbed in small amounts through the skin, so there is a risk of serious systemic side effects, such as local and generalized edema, salt and water retention, angina pectoris, tachycardia, pericarditis, pericardial effusion, pericardial tamponade, increased orthostatic hypotension caused by some antihypertensive drugs, for example, guanethidine or its derivatives. Therefore, patients with arterial hypertension receiving guanethidine or its derivatives should be under constant medical supervision during treatment with Regain. For the same reason, during treatment, it is necessary to periodically examine patients in order to identify possible signs of systemic side effects in time. If they are found, the drug should be canceled. With fluid retention and edema, diuretics may be prescribed, with angina pectoris and tachycardia - beta-blockers.

With caution for hair growth, Regaine should be used in patients with a history of cardiovascular diseases, since there is a possibility of an exacerbation of the disease.

Ethyl alcohol, which is part of the drug, can cause irritation and inflammation of the eyes. In case of contact with the eyes, mucous membranes or irritated skin, rinse them immediately with copious amounts of cold water.

Accidental ingestion of the drug can lead to serious consequences, including fluid retention in the body, tachycardia, and a decrease in blood pressure.

Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms

Used for hair growth, Regaine does not affect the ability to drive vehicles and perform potentially hazardous types of work that require high concentration.

Application during pregnancy and lactation

The effect of Regaine on pregnancy remains unexplored. If it enters the systemic circulation, minoxidil is excreted in breast milk. It is not recommended to use the drug during pregnancy and lactation.

Drug interactions

It has been established that Regaine can interact with some other drugs for external use, so the possibility of their combined use should be discussed with a doctor.

With the simultaneous use of an external cream containing 0.05% betamethasone, the systemic absorption of minoxidil is reduced; cream containing 0.05% tretinoin - increases the absorption of minoxidil.

With the simultaneous use of dithranol or tretinoin, an increase in the absorption of minoxidil is possible, since these agents cause changes in the protective functions of the skin.

There is no clinical evidence, but it is believed that in patients who receive concomitant treatment with peripheral vasodilators, increased orthostatic hypotension is possible.

A slight increase in the content of minoxidil in the blood cannot be ruled out in patients with arterial hypertension, who, simultaneously with the external use of Regain for hair, take minoxidil preparations inside.

Analogs

Regain's analogs are: Alerana, Cosilon, Revasil, Generolon, Alopeksi.
