Idebenone is a nootropic drug.
Release form and composition
Dosage form - capsules: size No. 1 (30 mg) or No. 0 (45 mg), hard gelatinous, with a yellow body and a brown lid; contents - a mixture of powder and granules of yellow or yellowish-orange color, there may be lumps (10 pcs. in blisters, 1, 2, 3, 6 or 12 packs are packed in a cardboard box; 15 pcs. in blisters, 1, 2, 4 or 8 packs are packed in a cardboard box).
Composition of 1 capsule:
- active substance: idebenone - 30 or 45 mg;
- auxiliary components: microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, magnesium stearate, macrogol (polyethylene glycol).
Composition of the gelatin capsule:
- body: titanium dioxide, gelatin, dye iron oxide yellow;
- cap: gelatin, titanium dioxide, iron dye red oxide, iron dye black oxide, iron dye yellow oxide.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Idebenone is a nootropic agent with trophic and metabolic effects. Improves oxygenation, blood supply to brain tissue and metabolic processes in the brain, increases the speed and intensity of neurophysiological reactions of brain structures, promotes the elimination of lactate. Protects membranes of neurons and mitochondria from damage by slowing down lipid peroxidation.
The antidepressant effect occurs at least 14 days after starting the drug.
Pharmacokinetics
Idebenone is rapidly and completely absorbed. The maximum plasma concentration is observed after 4 hours. In significant quantities, it penetrates the blood-brain barrier and is distributed in the brain tissues. Does not cumulate. It is excreted by the kidneys.
Indications for use
- manifestations of vestibular insufficiency (dizziness, tinnitus);
- asthenic and asthenic-depressive syndrome;
- psychoorganic syndrome due to impaired cerebral circulation and age-related involutional changes in the brain;
- moderately severe depressive syndrome;
- cerebroasthenic disorders of psychogenic (neurasthenia), vascular and traumatic etiology: decreased intellectual productivity and general activity, impaired memory and / or attention, emotional instability.
Contraindications
Absolute:
- chronic renal failure;
- hypersensitivity to the drug;
- age up to 18 years.

Instructions for the use of Idebenone: method and dosage
The tablets should be taken orally after meals. The last appointment must be no later than 17 hours.
Adults are usually prescribed 30 mg 2-3 times a day. Increase the dose if necessary.
The duration of therapy, depending on the clinical situation, is 1.5–2 months. Repeated courses are possible, only 2-3 courses per year are allowed.
Side effects
The drug is generally well tolerated. In rare cases, the following side effects are possible:
- from the gastrointestinal tract: dyspeptic disorders;
- from the central nervous system: headache, mental agitation, sleep disturbance;
- allergic reactions: skin rash.
Overdose
In case of an overdose, an increase in the severity of adverse reactions is possible. If you accidentally take a high dose of the drug, the patient should take activated charcoal. Further treatment is symptomatic.
