Dimetindene is a synthetic antihistamine that has anti-allergic and antipruritic effects.
pharmachologic effect
The active ingredient is dimethindene maleate. It has antiallergenic, antipruritic, sedative and anticholinergic effect.
It belongs to the 1st generation antihistamines. It is used for symptomatic treatment and relief of acute allergic reactions. One of the advantages of this drug is the possibility of its use for infants.
Release form
Dimetindene is produced as:
- Sustained-release capsules. Each capsule contains 4 mg of active ingredient. 10 pieces per pack;
- Oral drops. 1 ml contains 1 mg of dimethindene maleate. In a bottle of 20 ml;
- Gel. 10 g of gel contains 10 mg of active ingredient. In tubes of 30 g.
Indications for the use of Dimetinden
Dimetinden tablets and drops are used for:
- Allergic and non-allergic dermatoses;
- Allergic and chronic rhinitis;
- Insect bites;
- Itching with eczema;
- Chickenpox;
- Hives;
- Hay fever;
- Drug and food allergies.
Dimetindene gel is used for:
- Dermatosis;
- Quincke's edema;
- Hives;
- Insect bites.
Also, the gel is used for various types of burns. In some cases, it is possible to combine external use of the gel with taking the drug inside.
Contraindications
The drug has a small list of contraindications. It should not be used in case of hypersensitivity to dimethindene maleate or other alkylamine derivatives. Also, it is not prescribed for children under the age of 1 month and during the first trimester of pregnancy.
The drug is prescribed with caution when:
- Exacerbation of bronchial asthma;
- Closed-angle glaucoma;
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia;
- Chronic lung disease;
- Bladder neck obstruction;
- Children under one year of age.
Dimetindene is a fairly safe drug, however, during pregnancy and lactation, the drug in the form of tablets and drops should be used only for strict medical reasons.
The use of Dimetindene gel is contraindicated only in the first trimester of pregnancy, and in the future it can be used with caution and not applied to large areas. During breastfeeding, the gel is not applied to the nipple area.
Dimetindene is prescribed for children aged 1 month to 1 year, but also according to strict indications. At this age, especially with inflammation, you should not apply the gel to large areas of the skin.
When using the drug, care should be taken to engage in activities requiring increased attention and a quick reaction.
Instructions for the use of Dimetinden
Dimetindene is used in the form of tablets or drops:
- The adult daily dose is 3-6 mg of the drug. Usually the dose is divided into three doses. In some cases, with weakness or increased drowsiness, it is recommended to divide the dose into the morning intake during breakfast - 2 mg, and 4 mg at bedtime;
- Children's daily dose is 0.1 mg per 1 kg of body weight, divided into 3-4 doses.
Drops can be added immediately before feeding in a bottle with warm food or undiluted from a teaspoon in single doses:
- From 2 months to 1 year - 10 drops each;
- From 1 to 3 years - 10-15 drops each;
- Over 3 years old - 15-25 drops.
Dimetindene gel is used externally, applied to the affected skin two to four times a day. In case of extensive lesions of skin areas, the drug should be used only after consulting a doctor.
Sometimes at the beginning of treatment, fatigue, drowsiness and weakness may increase, allergic skin reactions and muscle spasms may occur. It is extremely rare - nausea, stomach pain, vomiting.
When using Dimetinden gel, sometimes there is a burning sensation and dryness at the site of application, itching or skin rash.
In young children, the drug can cause agitation, headache and respiratory system disorders.
When applying the gel to large areas of the skin, shorten the time spent in the sun.
Dimetindene enhances the depressing effect on the central nervous system of alcohol, sleeping pills and tranquilizers.
Storage conditions
The drug is dispensed by prescription. The shelf life of tablets and drops is 5 years, Dimetindene gel is 2 years.
