Method of administration and dosage
The solution is used by intravenous (IV) drip or continuous jet injection. The infusion rate should not exceed 5 ml of the drug per minute.
Do not mix Batsimex with other drugs!
IV metronidazole is prescribed for the relief of severe forms of infections and when it is impossible to take the drug inside.
Recommended dosage:
- patients over the age of 12 years: 500 mg 3 times a day (every 8 hours). The course of treatment is prescribed individually, taking into account clinical indications. The daily dose should not exceed 800 ml of solution. After stabilization of the condition, the transition to oral forms of metronidazole is indicated as maintenance therapy, depending on the nature of the infection;
- children under the age of 12: the daily dose is 7.5 mg per 1 kg of body weight, in equal shares it is divided into 3 administration procedures.
Prevention of anaerobic infection during planned surgery on the urinary tract and pelvic organs in adults and children over 12 years old begins with the appointment on the day of the operation of infusion at a dose of 500-1000 mg, then, the next day after surgery, 500 mg every 8 hours. Maintenance therapy with oral forms of metronidazole is prescribed 1–2 days after surgery.
In case of severe liver and / or kidney dysfunction, in patients with creatinine clearance (CC) less than 30 ml / min, the daily dose is 1000 mg, it is divided into 2 administration procedures.
Side effects
- from the nervous system: peripheral neuropathy, ataxia, against the background of long-term therapy - weakness, headache, sleep disturbances, dizziness, depression, increased excitability; in some cases - hallucinations, convulsions, confusion;
- from the gastrointestinal tract: lack of appetite, epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, metallic taste in the mouth, diarrhea;
- dermatological reactions: pruritus, rash, urticaria;
- from the hematopoietic system: leukopenia;
- from the musculoskeletal system: arthralgia;
- from the genitourinary system: burning sensation in the urethra, candidiasis;
- local reactions: pain at the injection site, hyperemia, swelling, thrombophlebitis;
- others: urine may be stained red-brown.
special instructions
If necessary, long-term use of the solution, the patient should be provided with regular monitoring of peripheral blood parameters.
Alcohol should not be consumed during treatment.
If symptoms of side effects from the nervous system appear, including dizziness and ataxia, immediate discontinuation of the drug is required.
Batsimex is able to immobilize treponemes and give a false positive Nelson test.
Drug interactions
With the simultaneous use of Batsimex:
- sulfonamides increase the antimicrobial effect of the drug;
- indirect anticoagulants, including warfarin, increase their effect, causing an increase in prothrombin time;
- cimetidine, inhibiting the metabolism of metronidazole, can increase the level of its concentration in the blood serum and the risk of side effects;
- phenobarbital, phenytoin (agents that stimulate enzymes of microsomal oxidation in the liver) can accelerate the metabolism of the drug, reducing its plasma content.
It is not recommended to prescribe metronidazole solution in combination and within 14 days after taking disulfiram preparations (Esperal), since there is a risk of developing symptoms of various neurological pathologies.
During the period of therapy with Batsimex, the use of non-depolarizing muscle relaxants (vecuronium bromide) is not recommended.
Against the background of long-term use of high doses of lithium preparations, intravenous administration of metronidazole can increase the concentration of lithium in the blood plasma and the development of symptoms of intoxication.
