Barboval is a sedative and hypnotic, myotropic antispasmodic.

Release form and composition

Barboval is released in the form of drops for oral administration: a colorless transparent liquid with a specific aromatic odor (in dark glass bottles of 25, 30, 50 ml).

1 ml of solution contains the main active ingredients:

  • Ethyl bromisovalerianate –18 mg;
  • Levomenthol (solution in menthyl isovalerate) - 80 mg;
  • Phenobarbital 17 mg

Excipients: sodium acetate trihydrate, rectified ethyl alcohol (ethanol), purified water.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

The effect of ethyl ester of α-bromisovaleric acid is a reflex, antispasmodic and soothing effect. This substance irritates the receptors mainly of the nasopharynx and the oral cavity, reduces the reflex excitability of the central nervous system, enhances the processes of inhibition in the neurons of the subcortical structures and the cerebral cortex, reduces the activity of the central vasomotor centers, and has a local direct spasmolytic effect on smooth muscles.

Phenobarbital enhances the sedative effect of other Barboval components, reduces the excitation of the central nervous system, and accelerates the onset of sleep. This component helps to reduce the excitatory effect on the vasomotor centers, peripheral and coronary vessels, reduce blood pressure, eliminate and prevent vascular spasms (especially cardiac).

The effect of levomenthol solution in menthyl isovalerate is sedative. The active substance, due to irritation of sensitive nerve endings, has a moderate reflex vasodilator effect, helps to slow down the peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract.

Indications for use

The drug has a calming effect on the central nervous system, has a vasodilating and moderate antispasmodic effect, helps to reduce flatulence and relax smooth muscles, as well as slow down the peristalsis of the stomach and intestines.

Due to this effect on the body, Barboval is prescribed in the following cases:

  • Insomnia, hysteria, irritability accompanying neuroses;
  • Sinus tachycardia, arterial hypertension of the first stage, mild attacks of angina pectoris;
  • Intestinal and stomach cramps, flatulence.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the drug;
  • Severe hepatic and / or renal impairment;
  • Alcohol addiction;
  • Traumatic brain injury or brain disease;
  • Age under 18;
  • Pregnancy and lactation.

Instructions for use Barboval: method and dosage

Barboval drops should be taken orally.

A single dose for adults - 10-15 drops, the frequency of receptions - 2-3 times a day before meals (20-30 minutes). The drug should be taken with a small amount of water or placed under the tongue, after dropping the product onto a sugar cube.

A more accurate dosage and duration of treatment is determined by the attending physician. To achieve the best effect, after a 10-15 day break, the course of treatment can be resumed.

Side effects

In rare cases and in case of an overdose, lacrimation, dizziness, nausea, and drowsiness may occur. These adverse events disappear after drug withdrawal or dose reduction.

Overdose

Frequent or prolonged use can contribute to the accumulation of the drug, leading to the following clinical manifestations of overdose:

  • depression of the central nervous system;
  • lowering blood pressure, nystagmus, ataxia.

Manifestations of chronic bromine poisoning: apathy, depression, conjunctivitis, rhinitis, impaired coordination of movement, hemorrhagic diathesis.

With constant long-term use of Barboval, addiction, drug dependence, withdrawal symptoms can occur. With a sudden cessation of admission, withdrawal syndrome develops. Sometimes, in the case of prolonged use of the drug, instead of the expected sedation, there is an increase in psychodynamic activity.

Treatment is symptomatic.

special instructions

In pediatric practice, there is no experience with the use of Barboval, therefore it is not used to treat children.

Phenobarbital and 62% ethanol contained in the solution can cause a violation of the speed of psychomotor reactions and coordination, and therefore, care must be taken when taking the drug to vehicle drivers, persons working with mechanisms.

Application during pregnancy and lactation

According to the instructions, Barboval is contraindicated for treatment during pregnancy and lactation.

Pediatric use

It is forbidden to use the drug to treat patients under the age of 18 years.

With impaired renal function

It is forbidden to use Barboval to treat patients with severe renal impairment.

For violations of liver function

It is forbidden to use Barboval drops for the treatment of patients with severe renal failure.

Drug interactions

The simultaneous use of tranquilizers and neuroleptics potentiates, and stimulants of the central nervous system - suppresses the action of each component of Barboval.

Due to the presence of barbituric acid derivatives in the preparation, it enhances the effects of analgesics, hypnotics and local anesthetics.

Ethanol enhances the effect of the drug and may increase its toxicity.

Due to the presence of phenobarbital, Barboval is able to induce liver enzymes, which makes it undesirable to take it simultaneously with drugs metabolized in the liver (with griseofulvin, coumarin derivatives, oral contraceptives, glucocorticoids). Due to the increased metabolic rate, the effectiveness of these drugs is reduced.

Barboval increases the toxicity of methotrexate.

Barboval has no direct analogues.
