Zhenale is an antigestogenic drug used for emergency contraception.
Release form and composition
Zhenale is produced in the form of tablets: biconvex, round, light yellow with a greenish tinge (in blisters of 1 pc., 1 or 2 packs in a cardboard box; in orange glass jars, 1 or 2 pcs., 1 can in each cardboard box).
The composition of 1 tablet includes:
- Active ingredient: mifepristone - 10 mg;
- Auxiliary components: sodium carboxymethyl starch - 5 mg, lactose monohydrate - 123.4 mg, magnesium stearate - 1.6 mg, potato starch - 22 mg, povidone K25 - 6 mg.
Indications for use
Zhenale is prescribed for emergency (post-coital) contraception within 72 hours after intercourse without previous use of contraceptive methods or drugs, as well as in case of their unsuccessful use, including slipping or breaking a condom, unsuccessful interruption of intercourse, an error during the use of the calendar method.
Contraindications
- Chronic or acute renal and / or hepatic failure;
- Adrenal insufficiency;
- Hemostasis disorders, including anticoagulant therapy prior to Zhenale's intake;
- Long-term use of glucocorticosteroid drugs;
- Anemia;
- Porphyria;
- Severe extragenital pathology;
- Pregnancy and lactation;
- History of hypersensitivity to drug components.
Breastfeeding after application of Zhenala needs to be interrupted for 2 weeks.
Method of administration and dosage
Zhenale is taken orally with a two-hour interval with food intake, regardless of the phase of the menstrual cycle.
Single dose - 1 tablet. The drug must be taken within the next 72 hours after unprotected intercourse.
Side effects
During the application of Zhenale, the following side effects may occur:
- Central nervous system: dizziness, headache;
- Digestive system: vomiting, nausea, diarrhea;
- Reproductive system: spotting from the genital tract, pain and discomfort in the lower abdomen, exacerbation of inflammatory processes of the appendages and uterus;
- Others: hyperthermia, weakness, urticaria.

Zhenale does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS.
It is not recommended to use the drug as a planned, permanent contraception after each sexual intercourse and / or monthly.
Until the end of the current menstrual cycle after using Zhenale, intercourse without the use of contraceptive drugs is not recommended. With further sexual intercourse, it is necessary to use a barrier method of contraception.
10 mg of mifepristone (1 dose) is not enough to induce an abortion, so a highly sensitive pregnancy test must be done before further use of the drug, which ensures that Zhenale is only used if there is no pregnancy.
If, despite taking Zhenale, a pregnancy has occurred, it is recommended to terminate it with a surgical or medical method, since it is impossible to completely eliminate the risk of developing fetal pathologies.
Drug interactions
For 8-12 days after taking Zhenale, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be avoided.
