Mezim is an enzyme preparation that promotes the digestion process.

pharmachologic effect

Mezim has proteolytic (breaks down proteins to amino acids), amylolytic (promotes the decomposition of starch to madtose and oligosaccharides) and lipolytic properties (breaks down fats to fatty acids and glycerin).

The active ingredient of the drug is pancreatin, which is an enzyme of the pancreas of animals, usually pigs.

The analgesic effect of Mezim is due to the properties of trypsin, one of the enzymes that suppresses the excessive secretion of the pancreas.

The use of Mezim allows you to replenish the lack of your own enzymes, thereby improving the digestion of food. A special membrane protects pancreatin from the action of gastric juice, allowing it to reach and be released in the small intestine. The maximum activity of enzymes can be observed 30-45 minutes after oral administration of Mezim.

Mezim analogs are preparations containing pancreatin and having a similar pharmacological effect.

The analogues of Mezim include Biozyme, Gastenorm Forte, Creon, Pancreatin, Festal, Hermital.

Indications for use of Mezim

Mezim instruction recommends taking at:

• diseases characterized by insufficiency of the exocrine function of the pancreas (chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, etc.);
• chronic inflammatory-dystrophic diseases of the gallbladder, liver, intestines, stomach;
• conditions after resection (surgery to remove part of the stomach) or irradiation of the digestive system, gallbladder, liver, which are accompanied by impaired digestion of food, diarrhea, flatulence;
• errors in diet, the use of unusual or fatty foods to facilitate its digestion;
• violation of chewing function, prolonged immobility or a sedentary lifestyle;
• preparation for X-ray examinations or ultrasound of the abdominal organs.

Contraindications

Mezim should not be taken in acute pancreatitis, exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis, as well as in case of hypersensitivity.

It is not recommended to take Mezim during pregnancy and breastfeeding, since adequate studies on the safety of this drug have not been conducted. Mezim during pregnancy can be prescribed by a doctor if alternative treatments are ineffective.

Instructions for the use of Mezim

One Mezim forte tablet contains pancreatin, in which the minimum enzymatic activity of lipase is 3500 U, protease - 250 U and amylase - 4200 U.

One tablet of Mezim forte 10,000 contains pancreatin, in which the activity of lipase, protease and amylase is 10,000 U, 375 U and 7,500 U, respectively.

The instruction recommends to take Mezim before meals, in its entirety, without violating the integrity of the shell, with a large amount of liquid (preferably fruit juices, alkaline water). The usual single dose of the drug is 1-2 tablets, if necessary, an additional 1-4 tablets can be taken with meals. The average daily dose of Mezim for adults is 150 thousand units of lipase, with complete deficiency of own enzymes - 400 thousand units of lipase. Mezim, the use should be agreed with the doctor, children under 1.5 years of age are prescribed in an amount equal to 50 thousand units per day, and children over 1.5 years old in a dose corresponding to 100 thousand units. In case of errors in the diet, Mezim can be used for several days, and if replacement therapy is necessary, the duration of treatment can be up to several months or years.

Side effects

The use of Mezim can lead to such undesirable effects as allergic reactions, discomfort in the epigastric region, nausea, constipation or diarrhea.

In the case of prolonged use of the drug, hyperuricosuria may develop (increased levels of uric acid in the urine).

Additional Information

A dark and dry place is suitable for storing Mezim, in which the air temperature does not rise above 25 ⁰ C.

If stored properly, the drug will remain usable for three years.
