special instructions

Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) can cause hypersensitivity reactions, including an attack of bronchial asthma and bronchospasm. Risk factors are fever, nasal polyps, bronchial asthma, a history of allergies (skin rashes, allergic rhinitis), chronic bronchopulmonary diseases.

ASA has an inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation, which can increase the tendency to bleeding. This fact should be taken into account when it is necessary to carry out a surgical intervention, even as small as a tooth extraction. To reduce bleeding during the operation, it is necessary to cancel Alka-Seltzer 5-7 days before the intervention. Be sure to warn the doctor about taking the drug.

Since ASA reduces the excretion of uric acid from the body, it can cause an acute attack of gout in patients with a predisposition.

The drug should not be prescribed to children under 15 years old, since if they develop a viral infection, the risk of Reye's syndrome increases, its symptoms: prolonged vomiting, liver enlargement, acute encephalopathy.

Patients on a diet with limited sodium intake should be aware that 1 Alka-Seltzer tablet contains 445 mg of sodium.

The drug has no negative effect on the speed of reactions and the ability to concentrate.

Drug interactions

  • Ethanol, anticoagulants (for example, heparin): the likelihood of damage to the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract increases, bleeding time increases;
  • Uricosurates (eg benzbromarone): decreases the uricosuric effect;
  • Digoxin: its concentration increases;
  • Thrombolytics: the risk of bleeding increases;
  • Valproic acid: its toxicity increases;
  • Antidiabetic drugs, including insulin: their hypoglycemic effect increases;
  • Systemic glucocorticosteroids, with the exception of hydrocortisone, which is used as replacement therapy for Addison's disease: the level of salicylates in the blood decreases;
  • Methotrexate at a dose of 15 mg per week: increases its hemolytic cytotoxicity;
  • Diuretics at a dose of 3 mg per day: decreases glomerular filtration;
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors at a dose of 3000 mg per day: glomerular filtration decreases and, as a consequence, the antihypertensive effect decreases;
  • Other NSAIDs and high doses of salicylates (from 3000 mg per day): the risk of ulcers and bleeding increases.
