Release form and composition

The dosage form of Potassium permanganate is a powder for preparing a solution for external use: crystals or crystalline fine powder of red or dark violet color with a metallic luster (3, 5 or 15 g in bags, cans or bottles, in a cardboard box 1 pc.; 3, 5 or 15 g in heat-sealable bags, in a cardboard box 10 bags; 15 g in plastic bags, in a cardboard box 1 package; 3 or 5 g in glass test tubes, in a cardboard box 1 test tube).

The active substance is potassium permanganate.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

The drug has an antiseptic and deodorant effect. In the process of reducing potassium permanganate, manganese oxide forms albumin (complex compounds) with proteins, therefore, in concentrated solutions, the drug has a tanning, cauterizing, irritating effect, and in low concentrations it has an astringent effect.

Potassium permanganate is able to neutralize some poisons, so it is included in solutions that are used to wash the stomach in case of poisoning. It is also effective in treating ulcers and burns.

When ingested, the drug is absorbed and has a hematotoxic effect (causes the development of methemoglobinemia).

Potassium permanganate is included in list No. 4 of the list of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors subject to control in the Russian Federation.

Indications for use

The use of the drug is indicated for washing wounds, burns, ulcers; douching and washing in urology and gynecology; gastric lavage in case of poisoning with ingested alkaloids (including morphine, aconitine) or phosphorus.

Contraindications

The therapeutic use of the drug is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to potassium permanganate.

Instructions for the use of Potassium permanganate: method and dosage

A solution of potassium permanganate is used topically and topically.

  • sharp pain in the mouth, along the esophagus, in the abdomen;
  • diarrhea, vomiting;
  • swelling of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity and pharynx, staining this area in a dark brown or purple color (it is also possible to develop laryngeal edema);
  • mechanical asphyxia;
  • burn shock;
  • motor excitement, convulsions, parkinsonism;
  • hemorrhagic colitis;
  • hepatopathy;
  • nephropathy;
  • methemoglobinemia with shortness of breath and severe cyanosis (in patients with low acidity of gastric juice).

Recommended treatment:

  • ascorbic acid (intravenously 30 ml of 5% solution);
  • methylthioninium chloride (50 ml of a 1% solution);
  • pyridoxine (intramuscularly 3 ml of 5% solution);
  • cyanocobalamin (up to 1 mg).

The lethal dose of the drug for children is approximately 3 g, for adults - from 0.3 to 0.5 g / kg.

Potassium permanganate should not be used as a drug for abortion, since such a procedure is fraught with great danger to the health and life of the pregnant woman. When injected into the vagina, a highly concentrated solution causes deep burns, perforation of the vaginal wall, severe bleeding, peritonitis, vascular collapse.

Application during pregnancy and lactation
