Gentamicin is an antibiotic with anti-inflammatory action.

Gentamicin sulfate belongs to the group of aminoglycosides, has a broad spectrum of action, being an antibiotic with bactericidal action.

The drug exhibits increased activity against gram-negative aerobic bacteria: Shigella, Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Enterobacter bacteria, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Gentamicin also acts against staphylococci (even those that are resistant to other antibiotics, penicillin), some strains of streptococci.

Resistant to the drug are meningococcus, treponema pale, some species of streptococci, anaerobic bacteria.

Release form

They produce Gentamicin powder for diluting the solution for injections, the Gentamicin injection solution itself, aerosol, Gentamicin ointment for external use and eye ointment, cream and drops.

Indications for the use of Gentamicin

According to the instructions, gentamicin is prescribed for such infections:

• urinary tract: cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis;
• respiratory tract: empyema, lung abscess, pleurisy, pneumonia;
• surgical infections: blood poisoning, inflammation of the peritoneum;
• cutaneous: dermatitis, multiple purulent inflammation, trophic ulcers, burns.

Instructions for the use of Gentamicin

The use of Gentamicin is best done after determining the sensitivity of the microflora that caused the disease to it.

The instructions indicate the average dosages used for treatment:

• with urinary tract infections for adolescents over 14 yrs. and adults, a single dose is 0.4 mg per kilogram of body weight, and the daily dose is 0.8-1.2 mg per kilogram of patient weight.
• With sepsis and other severe infections, the single dose is 0.8-1mg per kilogram, and the daily dose is 2.4-3.2mg.

The maximum dose is 5 mg per kilogram per day.

Children under 14 years of age Gentamicin sulfate is prescribed only for special indications.

The daily dose for infants and newborns is 2-5 mg per kilogram of weight. Children from 1-5 years old. appoint 1.5-3.0 mg per kilogram, children 6-14 liters. - 3mg per kilogram.

The maximum dosage of Gentamicin for children of different age groups is 5 mg / kg / day.

The daily dose is usually divided into two or three doses. The course lasts on average 7-10 days. Gentamicin injections are usually given intravenously for 2-3 days, and then they switch to intramuscular injections.

For intramuscular administration, Gentamicin sulfate is used in the form of a ready-made solution or diluted 2 ml. sterile water powder. For intravenous injections of Gentamicin, only a ready-made solution can be used.

Cream or ointment Gentamicin is used for purulent skin inflammation, folliculitis, furunculosis. At the same time, the affected areas are lubricated two to three r / day for one to two weeks.

For conjunctivitis, keratitis, and other infectious eye diseases, Gentamicin drops are used - three to four r / day.

Side effects

The use of Gentamicin can cause the following side effects: vomiting, nausea, hyperbilirubinemia, increased activity of liver transaminases, proteinuria, microhematuria, oliguria, renal failure, headaches, hearing impairment, drowsiness, irreversible deafness, vestibular disorders, impaired muscle and nerve conduction, rash fever, itching, angioedema (rare).

Contraindications

The instructions for Gentamicin indicate that its use is contraindicated if the patient has hypersensitivity to all antibiotics of the aminoglycoside group.

Also, Gentamicin is not used for neuritis of the auditory nerve, severe functional disorders of the kidneys, pregnancy, lactation, uremia.
