Subatrophic pharyngitis is the initial stage of the atrophic form of the disease. It develops after an asymptomatic or erased course of hypertrophic pharyngitis. The disease is characterized by diffuse lesions of the mucous membrane of the throat with the onset of the process of tissue atrophy. Most often it is localized in the oropharynx and laryngopharynx.

To avoid the development of an atrophic form of the disease, it is necessary to contact an ENT doctor for the appointment of therapy

The prognosis with the timely identification of the cause of the inflammation and the beginning of adequate therapy is positive - the likelihood of complete restoration of the functional capabilities of the throat mucosa is high. This is the main difference between the subatrophic form and the atrophic form, the treatment of which is much more difficult.

Lack of therapy leads to the development of chronic subatrophic pharyngitis, the progression of the pathological process and the appearance of complications - chronic laryngitis, oncological neoplasms.

The reasons for the development of the disease

The main causes of this form of pharyngitis are:

  • improper or insufficient treatment of acute pharyngitis;
  • removal of adenoids;
  • frequent use of vasoconstrictor drops in high doses;
  • metabolic disease;
  • diseases of the heart, liver, kidneys and lungs;
  • pathology of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) - intestinal dysbiosis, pancreatitis, esophagitis, chronic gastritis;
  • endocrine and autoimmune disorders;
  • chronic rhinitis, sinusitis, sinusitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis;
  • abnormal structure of the nasal septum;
  • occupational hazards: dry and dusty indoor air, temperature fluctuations, as well as frequent inhalation of chemical vapors, coal dust, emissions of harmful metals;
  • neuralgia of the vagus and glossopharyngeal nerve, increased anxiety, depression, hyperthyroidism;
  • oncological processes in the larynx;
  • congenital dysfunction of the salivary glands, diabetes mellitus, anemia.

Additional factors that provoke and accelerate atrophy of the pharyngeal mucosa include:

  • smoking, drinking strong alcohol;
  • exposure to cold, hot and / or dry air;
  • prolonged speech activity;
  • elderly age.

It is extremely rare that inflammation appears without prior development of acute pharyngitis due to dystrophic lesions of the gastrointestinal tract. In this case, it is considered as a symptom of hypotrophy of the digestive tract.

Since the disease can be a consequence of many reasons, conducting therapy without eliminating the provoking factors is ineffective.

Symptoms of subatrophic pharyngitis

The manifestations of the disease largely depend on the true cause that caused its occurrence.

Common symptoms include:

  • dryness, soreness, burning and foreign body sensation in the throat, which makes you want to clear it and cough up;
  • dry cough;
  • an accumulation of thick, viscous mucus on the back of the throat, leading to crusting;
  • a pale and dry throat that makes you want to take a sip of water;
  • presence of foci of hyperplastic lymphoid tissue, visualization of swollen tubopharyngeal ridges;
  • thinning of the mucous membrane, increased soreness and discomfort in the throat;
  • bad breath (in some cases);
  • sleep disturbance, increased nervousness and irritability.

Treatment of chronic subatrophic pharyngitis

At the first signs of the disease, it is important to seek medical help from an otolaryngologist. Only a qualified doctor can make an accurate diagnosis and establish the possible cause of the development of inflammation.

An important place in the treatment is the elimination of chronic respiratory infections, thorough sanitation of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and normalization of nasal breathing, if there are problems with it. With concomitant tonsillitis, it is possible to use conservative and surgical methods of therapy.

Patients are advised to quit smoking, eliminate harmful domestic and industrial factors that contribute to the maintenance of inflammation of the throat mucosa. It also shows adherence to a diet with the exception of spicy, salty, sour and hot dishes.

Without fail, an examination of the gastrointestinal tract should be carried out for the detection of pathologies associated with it. Often, it is impossible to completely stop the symptoms of the disease until the disruption of the stomach or intestines is eliminated.

Medical treatment of the disease may include the use of antibiotics, antiseptics, anti-inflammatory and antihistamines. Also, patients are prescribed drugs for local throat treatment:

  • dosed aerogels for irrigation: Proposol, Ingalipt, Hexoral, Tantum Verde;
  • rinsing solutions: Miramistin, Furacilin, Povidone-iodine;
  • tablets and lozenges for resorption: Faringosept, Septogal, Anti-angina, Septolete, Tetecept-Anidin, Drill.

Along with conservative treatment, the use of physiotherapeutic methods is effective - ultraviolet radiation, throat phonophoresis, microwave and ultrasound therapy.

How to treat subatrophic pharyngitis with folk remedies

According to the doctor's prescription, traditional medicine can also be used to treat the disease in adults.

The most effective among them are:

  • alcohol compresses for external use: gauze or cotton cloth is rolled up in several layers and soaked in alcohol diluted in water. The compress is applied to the throat area and fixed with cling film. The procedure helps to relieve pain, it is recommended to carry it out at night for several days;
  • decoctions of herbs for rinsing: dry raw chamomile, plantain or coltsfoot is poured with boiling water, put on a slow fire for 15 minutes, then cooled and squeezed thoroughly. Rinse the throat with the prepared liquid 2-3 times a day for 10 days;
  • sea buckthorn oil for lubricating the back of the larynx: using a cotton swab dipped in sea buckthorn oil, lubricate the back of the throat. The product has a pronounced emollient and moisturizing effect. The procedure is recommended to be carried out 2 times a day for a long period;
  • garlic-honey syrup for oral administration: chopped head of garlic without husks is mixed with 100 g of honey heated to a liquid state. The product is cooled and slowly dissolve 1 teaspoon several times a day. Duration of admission should not exceed 20 days;
  • boiled potatoes for steam inhalation: several potatoes are boiled until fully cooked, after which steam is inhaled for 15 minutes, covering the head with a towel. After the procedure, the throat is lubricated with sea buckthorn oil.

Before carrying out the procedures, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the thematic photos and videos for their correct implementation. For the treatment to be effective, folk remedies should be used in combination, for example, rinsing, inhalation and compresses. During the therapy period, it is recommended to use herbal teas instead of coffee, tea or other hot drinks. It is also necessary to humidify the air in the room where the patient is most often located.
