Ferrum Lek is a remedy for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia.
Pharmacological properties
According to the instructions, Ferrum Lek was created on the basis of a hydroxide-polymaltose complex of ferric iron. This active ingredient has a high molecular weight and cannot be absorbed by diffusion or concentration gradient. In structure, the hydroxide-polymaltose iron complex is similar to ferritin, a complex natural for the body, consisting of iron and a protein part.
These differences from the bivalent analogues of Ferrum Leka are its advantages - the drug is actively transported through the mucous membranes, and its excess absorption is impossible - only the amount of iron in which there is a need will enter the body. The drug does not have a damaging effect on membranes and mucous membranes, since it is devoid of the oxidizing capacity of bivalent iron.
In the body, iron is used to build hemoglobin in the bone marrow, muscle protein, and tissue enzymes. Hemoglobin carries oxygen to the tissues, and from them carbon dioxide.
Ferrum Lek quickly enters the bloodstream when taken orally, absorbed mainly in the duodenum. In the blood, it binds to the transport protein transferrin and is carried to tissues. Under the conditions of the body, Ferrum Lek is stable and does not emit iron ions. It is excreted through the intestines.
Release form
According to the instructions, Ferrum Lek is released in the form of chewable tablets, solution for injection and syrup inside.
Indications for use of Ferrum Leka
The drug is prescribed for the treatment of iron deficiency conditions associated with increased consumption or insufficient intake of iron in the body. In addition to an obvious iron deficiency, the drug eliminates its latent deficiency when there are no clinical manifestations of anemia, but with the help of laboratory tests, a decrease in iron content can be detected.
Good reviews about Ferrum Leke were obtained when using it in pregnant women for the prevention of anemia.
Contraindications
According to the instructions, Ferrum Lek should not be taken with an excess of iron in the body (hemochromatosis), with increased sensitivity to the components of the drug, if it is known that anemia has not arisen due to iron deficiency (hemolytic, vitamin deficiency). If the way of utilization of iron is disrupted (for example, some bacteria consume it during infectious diseases or lead intoxication), the drug should also not be used.
Instructions for use Ferrum Leka
The drug in tablets is taken during or after meals with water or juices. The tablet can be chewed or swallowed whole.
For the treatment of iron deficiency anemia, take 1 tablet 2-3 times a day. The duration of treatment is on average 3-4 months, it may vary depending on the level of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is recommended to be monitored during treatment every 10-14 days. After reaching its normal level, continue taking Ferrum Leka for another 6-8 weeks in a half dose. This is necessary to replenish the tissue iron depot.
Children are prescribed a medicine in the form of a syrup. According to reviews, Ferrum Lek in syrup is liked by young children because of its pleasant taste. It can be added to baby food or mixed with juice. Up to 1 year, the dose of syrup is 2.5-5 ml per day, from 1 to 12 years old - from 5 to 10 ml, over 12 years old - 10-30 ml per day.
If laboratory tests reveal a latent iron deficiency, the course of saturation of the body with it is 1-2 months. Children from 1 to 12 years old take Ferrum Leka syrup 2.5-5 ml per day to eliminate it, over 12 years old and adults - 1 tablet or 5-10 ml of syrup per day.
The drug in the form of a solution is administered intramuscularly 1 time a day (intravenous administration is contraindicated). Usually, parenteral administration of iron and other Ferrum Leka analogs is required in case of severe anemia, the need to quickly raise blood hemoglobin, for example, before surgery, or if iron absorption in the intestine is impaired.
To identify possible intolerance, a trial administration of ½ the dose is done before the first treatment dose. If after the introduction of the reaction did not follow, after 15-30 minutes, the remaining dose is administered. The amount of the drug for the course and for the introduction is calculated according to special formulas.
Side effects of Ferrum Leka
According to reviews, Ferrum Lek is capable of causing nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, headache, fever, dizziness, and decreased blood pressure. With parenteral administration, there may be anaphylactic reactions or local inflammatory changes - redness, infiltration.
During treatment with the drug, the stool turns black.
