Tobrex is an ophthalmic antibacterial drug with a bactericidal effect.
Release form and composition
Dosage forms:
- eye ointment 0.3%: a homogeneous mass of almost white or white color (3.5 g each in an aluminum tube, in a cardboard box 1 tube);
- eye drops 0.3%: a clear solution from light yellow to colorless (5 ml in a dropper bottle Droptainer, in a cardboard box 1 dropper bottle).
1 g of ointment contains:
- active substance: tobramycin - 0.003 g;
- auxiliary components: liquid paraffin (synthetic mineral oil), anhydrous chlorobutanol, white petrolatum.
1 ml drops contain:
- active substance: tobramycin - 0.003 g;
- auxiliary components: tyloxapol, benzalkonium chloride solution, anhydrous sodium sulfate, boric acid, sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide and / or sulfuric acid, purified water.
Indications for use
The use of Tobrex is indicated for the treatment of infectious pathologies of the eyes and their appendages:
- conjunctivitis;
- keratoconjunctivitis;
- iridocyclitis;
- blepharoconjunctivitis;
- blepharitis;
- keratitis.
In addition, the drug is prescribed for the prevention of postoperative infections.
Contraindications
Individual intolerance to the components of the drug.
Tobramycin should be prescribed with caution to patients in childhood, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Method of administration and dosage
Eye ointment
The ointment is applied topically by placing a strip 1.5 cm long in the conjunctival sac.
Recommended frequency of instillations:
- mild infections: 2-3 times a day;
- acute period of severe infections: every 3-4 hours, as the inflammatory process decreases, the frequency of use is reduced.
Eye drops
Drops are intended for topical application by instillation into the conjunctival sac.
Recommended dosage:
- mild infections: 1-2 drops every 4 hours;
- acute period of severe infections: 2 drops every hour, then as the inflammatory process decreases, the frequency of instillations should be reduced.
Side effects
Against the background of the use of Tobrex, local undesirable effects may appear in the form of allergic reactions: itching and swelling of the eyelids, lacrimation, conjunctival hyperemia, burning, sensation of a foreign body in the eye.

The simultaneous use of ointment and eye drops is possible.
With prolonged use of Tobrex, the risk of superinfection increases. In case of overgrowth of refractory microorganisms, including fungal infection, adequate therapy is necessary.
Before using the drug, contact lenses should be removed; they can be reinstalled only 15 minutes after the procedure.
After each use, the bottle and tube must be tightly closed.
Since the action of the drug can cause a temporary decrease in vision clarity, patients should be careful when driving vehicles and mechanisms.
Drug interactions
The simultaneous use of aminoglycoside antibiotics of systemic action can cause an increase in undesirable effects of a general nature.
