Neomycin is a topical antibiotic drug.

Release form and composition

Dosage form - aerosol for external use: a homogeneous white or almost white suspension with a characteristic odor (in aerosol cans of 16 or 32 g, 1 can in a cardboard box, complete with a spray device and a valve).

The 1000 mg aerosol contains:

• Active ingredient: neomycin - 11.72 mg (in the form of sulfate);
• Auxiliary components: lecithin - 0.2 mg, sorbitan trioleate - 10.3 mg, propellant (propane / butane / isobutane) - 843.8 mg, isopropyl myristate - 134 mg.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Neomycin belongs to the group of aminoglycoside antibiotics. Its mechanism of action is due to the ability to suppress the formation of a complex of transport and matrix ribonucleic acid (RNA) and, as a consequence, disrupt protein synthesis.

In low concentrations, the drug has a bacteriostatic effect (disrupts protein synthesis in microbial cells), in high doses - a bactericidal effect (damages the cytoplasmic membranes of a microbial cell). Neomycin is able to penetrate into the microbial cell, where it binds to specific receptor proteins on the 30S ribosome subunit, as a result of which it disrupts the formation of a complex of the transport and messenger RNA (30S ribosome subunit) and inhibits protein synthesis.

The antibiotic Neomycin is effective against infections caused by a number of gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic microorganisms, including Streptococcus spp. and Staphylococcus spp.

The drug is moderately active against the following microorganisms: aerobic bacteria Listeria monocytogenes and Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Enterobacteriaceae Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus spp., Vibrio cholerae, Enterobacter aerogenes and Mycobacterium influenza coli, Escherbacus influenza coli

Neomycin has no effect on anaerobic bacteria and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Resistance of bacteria to the drug develops slowly and to a small extent.

In the form of an aerosol for external use, Neomycin inhibits the development of bacterial flora in the foci of skin inflammation. It also has a cooling and drying effect.

Pharmacokinetics

In the absence of skin lesions at the sites of application of the drug, neomycin is practically not absorbed into the blood. Otherwise, it can be absorbed into the bloodstream and cause systemic effects.

Indications for use

• Skin infectious and inflammatory diseases caused by microorganisms sensitive to the action of the active substance (including contagious impetigo, furunculosis);
• Infected frostbite and burns of I and II degrees.

Contraindications

• Trophic ulcers, a large area of the lesion, violation of the integrity of the skin, weeping at the site of application;
• Simultaneous use with other nephro- and ototoxic drugs;
• Childhood;
• Hypersensitivity to drug components.

Pregnant women can use Neomycin only in cases where the benefits to the health of the mother are higher than the possible harm to the fetus. During lactation, breastfeeding should be interrupted.

Instructions for the use of Neomycin: method and dosage

The aerosol is used externally. Shake the can vigorously several times before each use.

The affected areas of the skin are irrigated with an aerosol for 3 seconds, holding the bottle vertically at a distance of about 15-20 cm from the skin surface.

The frequency of application of the drug is 1-3 times a day with observance of equal intervals of time.

The average duration of the treatment course is 7-10 days.

Side effects

During the use of Neomycin, allergic reactions may develop, manifested in the form of itching, rash, hyperemia and edema. With prolonged therapy, contact allergy may occur.

Overdose

Overdose can manifest itself as a rash, itching, edema, hyperemia, as well as nephro- and ototoxicity.

Application during pregnancy and lactation

Pediatric use

Long-term combination therapy with nephro- and ototoxic drugs (including gentamicin, ethacrynic acid and colistin) may increase the toxicity of neomycin.
