Carbocisteine is a mucolytic drug that stimulates the motor function of the ciliated epithelium of the respiratory tract, reduces viscosity and facilitates the passage of bronchial secretions and sinus secretions.
Release form and composition
- Capsules (8 pcs. In a blister, 4 blisters in a cardboard box);
- Syrup 5% (120 ml each in a dark glass bottle, 1 bottle in a cardboard box);
- Syrup for children 2% (120 ml each in a dark glass bottle, 1 bottle in a cardboard box).
The active substance is carbocisteine:
- 1 capsule - 375 mg;
- 5 ml of syrup - 125 or 250 mg.
Indications for use
- Diseases of the respiratory system, accompanied by the formation of viscous sputum in large quantities: bronchitis with broncho-obstructive syndrome, acute and chronic bronchitis, tracheobronchitis, bronchiectasis, whooping cough, pneumonia, bronchial asthma;
- Inflammatory diseases of the middle ear and sinuses.
Also, Carbocisteine can be used to prepare patients for diagnostic studies of the tracheobronchial tree (bronchography and / or bronchoscopy).
Contraindications
- Exacerbation of gastric ulcer and 12 duodenal ulcer;
- Acute cystitis;
- Acute glomerulonephritis;
- Lactation (or feeding should be suspended for the period of treatment);
- I trimester of pregnancy;
- Hypersensitivity to the drug.
Carbocisteine should be used with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease, as well as in pregnant women in the II and III trimesters.
Method of administration and dosage
Carbocisteine is taken orally.
Recommended doses:
- Adults and adolescents over 12 years old: 750 mg each (2 capsules or 3 tsp syrup at a dose of 250 mg / 5 ml) 3 times a day;
- Children 5-12 years old: 250 mg each (1 tsp syrup at a dose of 250 mg / 5 ml or 2 tsp syrup at a dose of 125 mg / 5 ml) 3 times a day;
- Children 2.5-5 years old: ½ tsp. syrup at a dose of 125 mg / 5 ml 4 times a day;
- Children from 1 month to 2.5 years: 50 mg 2 times a day.
After improvement of the condition, the dose can be halved.
Side effects
Basically, carbocisteine is well tolerated, in rare cases, the following side effects occur:
- Digestive system: pain in the epigastric region, nausea, diarrhea, bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract, vomiting;
- Allergic reactions: skin rash, angioedema.

Carbocisteine enhances the effect of theophylline.
