Rhizome cinquefoil is an astringent herbal medicine.

Release form and composition

Dosage form of Cinquefoil rhizomes:

  • rhizomes powder: from dark brown to reddish-brown, indefinitely shaped pieces of rhizomes with yellow, yellowish-brown or almost black blotches, with a weak aromatic odor; water extract has an astringent taste (in a cardboard box 10 or 20 filter bags containing 1.5 or 2.5 g of powder each);
  • crushed rhizomes: pinkish-brown, different-shaped pieces of rhizomes with yellowish-brown, yellow or almost black blotches, passing through a sieve with 7 mm holes, with a faint aromatic odor; water extraction has a strong astringent taste (in a cardboard box 1 inner bag made of paper, polyethylene or polypropylene, containing 30, 50, 75 or 100 mg of raw materials).

The composition of 1 g of raw material or powder contained in 1 filter bag contains the active substance: Potentilla rhizomes (containing starch, phenolcarboxylic acids, flavonoids, resinous substances, saponins, tannins) - 100%.

Pharmacological properties

The raw material for cinquefoil rhizomes is a perennial herb cinquefoil erect (wild galangal, narrow-eyed, dubrovka, etc.), the infusion / decoction of rhizomes of which has an anti-inflammatory and astringent effect, is applied as needed inside and out. The tannins, saponins, resins and other valuable compounds contained in the plant help to strengthen the mucous membranes, reduce the intensity of inflammatory processes and accelerate tissue regeneration.

Pharmacological property of Cinquefoil rhizomes: bactericidal, anti-inflammatory, astringent and hemostatic. Tannins provide a local anti-inflammatory effect through the formation of a biological film that protects tissues from bacterial, chemical and mechanical damage accompanying inflammation. At the same time, the vessels are narrowed and the capillary permeability decreases. Crystalline ester tormentol, quinic and ellagic acids, glycoside tomelin, triterpene saponins in the form of a glycoside, wax, starch, resinous substances contained in the plant, have a general anti-inflammatory, expectorant, moderate choleretic, anthelmintic, analgesic and sedative effect.

Indications for use

Properties of Cinquefoil rhizomes are used in the treatment of the following diseases:

  • pathology of the gastrointestinal tract: colitis, enteritis, diarrhea (for oral administration);
  • inflammatory processes of the oral cavity: tonsillitis, gingivitis, stomatitis (for local use in the form of rinses and lotions).

Contraindications

The use of cinquefoil rhizomes is contraindicated in the presence of individual intolerance to the components contained in the herbal preparation.

Oral administration of the drug is unacceptable in the following cases:

  • pregnancy;
  • lactation period;
  • age under 12.

Rhizome cinquefoil, instructions for use: method and dosage

The infusion / decoction prepared from the cinquefoil rhizomes is used orally or externally.

To obtain infusion, 1 filter bag with 1.5 g of powder is placed in an enamel or glass container and 0.1 l of boiling water is poured. Cover the liquid and insist at room temperature for half an hour. After that, the filter bag is removed from the container and squeezed out, and the volume of the resulting infusion is brought to 0.1 l by adding boiled water.

The drug is taken orally at 0.1 l 3 times a day or used for rinsing the mouth.

To prepare a decoction of 1 tbsp. a spoon (10 g) of crushed rhizomes is poured into an enamel container, 0.2 l of hot boiled water is poured. The container is covered with a lid and placed in a boiling water bath for half an hour. Then the broth is filtered and squeezed without cooling, after which it is filtered again. The resulting liquid is brought to a volume of 0.2 l by adding boiled water.

The broth is taken orally in 1 tbsp. spoon 3 times a day for a period from 7 to 21 days. Outwardly, the drug is used for rinsing ½ – 1 glass for 14–28 days.

Immediately before use, the infusion or broth is shaken.

Side effects

During the period of application of Cinquefoil rhizomes, allergic reactions may develop. With prolonged use of the drug in high doses, constipation and loss of appetite may occur.
