Latin name: Volvit
ATX code: A11HA05
Active ingredient: biotin (biotin)
Manufacturer: Kusum Helthker Pvt (India)
Description and photo update: 2019-23-08
Volvit is a vitamin preparation that affects metabolic processes.
Release form and composition
Volvit is produced in the form of coated tablets, round, biconvex, pink (10 pcs in blisters, 3 blisters in a cardboard box).
The composition of 1 tablet includes:
- Active ingredient: biotin - 5 mg or 10 mg;
- Auxiliary components: colloidal silicon dioxide, cell lactose 80, croscarmellose sodium, sodium lauryl sulfate, magnesium stearate, Opadry II 85 G 54348 pink coating (quinoline yellow (E 104), titanium dioxide (E 171), Ponceau 4R (E 124)).
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Volvit is a vitamin preparation, the active ingredient of which is biotin - a water-soluble B vitamin (vitamin B 7, or H).
Biotin affects metabolic processes, is necessary for neuro-trophic processes and cell differentiation, participates in lipid metabolism, as well as decarboxylation, carboxylation and deamination of proteins and carbohydrates.
Influence on fat metabolism: malonyl-CoA is involved in fat metabolism, for the production of which a biotin-dependent enzyme is required, which improves the metabolism of free fatty acids.
Effect on carbohydrate metabolism: biotin regulates the expression of genes involved in glucose and insulin metabolism; stimulates the functional activity of genes that regulate glucose uptake; increasing insulin production and increasing sensitivity to it, stimulates the synthesis of glucokinase and inhibits the enzyme that stimulates glycogenolysis. Due to the adequate consumption of glucose by the nervous tissue, the full maturation and development of nerve fibers is ensured.
Effects on protein metabolism: biotin is a coenzyme that is involved in carboxylation and transcarboxylation; necessary for the synthesis of purine nucleotides and proteins; participates in the breakdown of amino acids - leucine and isoleucine.
Influence on the development of skin, nail and hair appendages: biotin takes part in the creation of keratin - a protein necessary for the matrix of the nail plate and hair; improves the structure and growth of hair, eliminates the manifestations of their early depigmentation. Biotin is a source of sulfur and also transports sulfur to the skin and its appendages, promoting collagen formation. Normalizes the function of the sebaceous glands.
Impact on the development of the skeletal system: biotin controls genes that regulate the development of cells in bone and connective tissue.
In the case of a carboxylase deficiency, biotin is necessary for the human body as a carrier of the carboxylase and carboxyl cofactor under conditions of an innate decrease in the activity of holocarboxylase synthetase.
Pharmacokinetics
After taking Volvit inside, biotin is absorbed mainly in the small intestine by passive diffusion, partly by active transport.
Up to 80% of the dose binds to blood proteins. Penetrates the blood-brain barrier and the placenta.
Metabolized to form various metabolites. It is excreted in urine and feces: 50% - unchanged, the rest - in the form of biologically inactive metabolic products.
The half-life (T ½) is dose-dependent, averaging 26 hours. In hereditary metabolic diseases with biotinidase deficiency, T ½ decreases to 10-14 hours.
Indications for use
According to the instructions, Volvit is prescribed as a therapeutic or prophylactic agent for biotin-deficient conditions:
- Hair diseases: pigmentation disorders (gray hair), alopecia, disturbances in hair growth and structure, seborrhea of the scalp and dandruff;
- Diseases of the nails: structural changes and impaired growth of the nail plate;
- Skin diseases: functional disorders of the sebaceous glands of the skin, dermatitis, disorders of the processes of keratinization of the skin;
- Malabsorption syndrome, diseases or functional disorders of the digestive system;
- Disorders of the psycho-emotional sphere;
- Hereditary metabolic diseases with biotinidase deficiency.
Contraindications
- Children under 12 years of age;
- Hypersensitivity to Volvite's components.
Instructions for the use of Volvit: method and dosage
Volvit tablets are taken orally 1 time a day with a small amount of liquid. The drug is recommended to be used before meals.
As a rule, vitamins are prescribed at 5 mg per day, however, depending on the indications, the dose may be increased:
- Malabsorption syndrome - 10 mg;
- Multiple carboxylase deficiency - up to 20 mg;
- Hereditary metabolic diseases associated with biotinidase deficiency - 5-10 mg.
The drug should be taken continuously for a month.
Side effects
In case of intolerance to the active substance (biotin), allergic reactions may occur, manifested in the form of urticaria, skin rashes, chest pains, an allergic edematous process of the laryngeal mucosa.
Overdose
Overdose cases of Volvit are not registered. The excess of the active substance of the drug is excreted from the body in the urine.
special instructions
Excessive consumption of raw egg proteins during treatment can reduce the bioavailability of biotin.
Volvit vitamins can be taken for a long time, with irregular intake or interruption of the course, the effectiveness of treatment decreases. Alcohol intake also reduces the effect.
Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms
The negative effect of Volvit on cognitive functions was not noted, which allows driving vehicles during therapy.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
There is no data on the negative effects of biotin during pregnancy and lactation, but there is not enough experience with its use, therefore, pregnant and breastfeeding women can take Volvit only on the recommendation of a doctor and under his supervision.
Pediatric use
Volvit vitamins are contraindicated in children under 12 years of age.
Drug interactions
The simultaneous use of Volvit with anticonvulsants can lead to a decrease in the level of biotin in the blood (due to the acceleration of its elimination from the body).
Medicines based on valproic acid inhibit the activity of the biotinidase enzyme, which can cause a decrease in its bioavailability and disrupt absorption.
Pantothenic acid competitively interacts with Volvit, reducing its effectiveness, so their simultaneous use is not recommended.
Zinc helps to potentiate the action of biotin, increasing its effect on the growth of skin appendages.
Analogs
Volvit's analogs are: Deakura, Medobiotin.
Terms and conditions of storage
Store in a dark, dry place out of reach of children at temperatures up to 25 ° C.
Shelf life is 2 years.
Terms of dispensing from pharmacies
Available without a prescription.
