Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Afrin moisturizing belongs to alpha-adrenergic stimulants. It has a vasoconstrictor effect. By narrowing the vessels of the mucous membranes of the paranasal sinuses, nose and Eustachian tube reduces their edema and facilitates nasal breathing in case of infectious-inflammatory and / or allergic rhinitis.

The auxiliary components of the drug (sodium carmellose, microcrystalline cellulose and povidone-K29-32) make the spray viscous, which contributes to a more effective retention of the drug on the mucous membranes and prevents the spray from flowing out of the nose and draining down the throat (compared to a standard aqueous solution).

Macrogol-1450 and glycerol are the components that provide the moisturizing properties of the drug. They help to retain moisture and moisturize dry and irritated nasal mucosa.

According to clinical studies, Afrin moisturizing begins to act within the first minute and retains its therapeutic properties for 12 hours.

Pharmacokinetics

When applied topically, oxymetazoline is almost not detected in the blood.

With a significant overdose or unintentional intake of oxymetazoline inside, the following symptoms are possible: vomiting, nausea, arrhythmia, shortness of breath, cyanosis, increased blood pressure, tachycardia, fever, depression of the central nervous system, mental disorders.

Symptomatic treatment is performed. When ingested, the stomach is washed and activated charcoal is given to the patient. The use of vasopressor drugs is contraindicated.

special instructions

Avoid getting the spray in the eyes.

Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms

When used in recommended doses, Afrin Moisturizing does not affect the patient's ability to drive and work with other potentially dangerous mechanisms, but if reactions such as dizziness occur, it is necessary to refrain from engaging in hazardous activities.

Application during pregnancy and lactation

In pregnant and lactating women, nasal spray is used with caution, assessing the expected benefits of treatment for the mother and the possible risk to the developing fetus or infant.

Pediatric use

Afrin Moisturizing Nasal Spray should not be administered to children under 6 years of age.

With impaired renal function

In patients with chronic renal failure, oxymetazoline is used with caution.

Drug interactions

Afrin moisturizing inhibits the absorption of drugs for local anesthesia and lengthens the duration of their action.

It is not recommended to use oxymetazoline at the same time as other vasoconstrictor drugs, as this increases the likelihood of unwanted side effects.

Concomitant use with tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors increases the risk of hypertension.

Reviews of Afrin moisturizing

According to reviews, Afrin moisturizing copes well with the main task - the elimination of a runny nose and nasal congestion. The vasoconstrictor and moisturizing effects come on very quickly and persist for a long time. The spray is convenient to spray; there is no irritating effect on the mucous membrane of the throat, since the gel-like consistency of the drug does not allow it to drain below.

The main disadvantage is cost. Also, patients note the possibility of addiction and side reactions (headaches, dry nose).
