With laryngitis, the inflammatory process affects the mucous membrane of the larynx, including the vocal cords. At the same time, problems with the voice appear, it becomes hoarse, and in some cases it disappears altogether.

The cause of the pathology is most often a viral infection. Getting on the mucous membrane, coronaviruses, adenoviruses, influenza or measles virus causes inflammation. Laryngitis often develops against the background of ARVI (acute respiratory viral infection).

Sometimes bacteria (streptococcus or staphylococcus) or an allergic reaction are the cause of the disease. Very rarely, laryngitis is associated with autoimmune diseases.

The factors that contribute to the appearance of pathology include smoking, hypothermia, being in dusty and gas-filled rooms or living in ecologically unfavorable areas.

Laryngitis symptoms

The onset of the disease is usually manifested by weakness, lethargy, and decreased appetite. Laryngitis is often accompanied by an increase in body temperature. Then there is a tickling and sore throat, hoarseness of the voice is noted and its timbre changes. Sometimes a person can only speak in a whisper.

Laryngitis cough is quite specific, it resembles a dog barking. Attacks can occur during the day, but it is especially annoying at night when a person takes a horizontal position. During the recovery phase, the cough becomes moist.

The disease can be acute, when its symptoms are pronounced and disappear within a week after adequate treatment, or chronic. In the second case, hoarseness and coughing occur periodically.

Treatment is usually done at home. Adults are hospitalized only if laryngitis develops against the background of other chronic diseases or leads to complications.
