Garment hygiene
In the mythology of ancient Greece, Asclepius and his two daughters, Hygieia and Panacea, were the main healers. Panakeya, which means “all-healing”, from whose name the term “panacea” originated, was responsible for the treatment, that is, for the restoration of human health. Hygieia, who gave the name to hygiene, was responsible for maintaining health, preventing disease, and did this by educating people. The Hippocratic Oath, which doctors all over the world take, begins like this: "I swear by Apollo the doctor, Asclepius, Hygieia and Panacea and all the gods and goddesses, taking them as witnesses …" You see, already in ancient times it was known how important hygiene is in human life, including clothing hygiene.
Garment hygiene is not only about cleanliness, although this is also important. In fact, garment hygiene includes several conditions, the purpose of which is the garment's best performance of its function of protecting the body. It protects from cold, heat, wind, dust, dirt, minor injuries, insect bites, and, if desired, from immodest looks. The last aspect is outside the topic of our small study, and we will dwell on the previous ones in a little more detail.
So, the first requirement of clothing hygiene is its compliance with the season - summer clothes should be protected from overheating and sunburn, in autumn and spring from wind and dampness, and in winter from cold.
The second requirement is the conformity of what we wear with its purpose. There are more or less universal things, but still there are activities that have special requirements for clothing, since only special clothing in this case can fulfill its protective function. For example, a doctor needs to buy medical clothing because it is best suited for hospital work. An athlete needs a sports suit that does not restrict movement, a motorcyclist needs a protective helmet, etc.
The third condition for the hygiene of clothes: it should not cause inconvenience. And if you put on a beautiful expensive dress, but it is difficult for you to walk and breathe in it, then, despite its purity and beauty, it does not meet hygienic requirements. This applies not only to the cut, but also to the materials. The material of the garment should not interfere with normal bodily functions such as sweating. That is why things made from natural fabrics are much healthier.
