Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Glucosamine sulfate is an active component of Elbona - a substance that stimulates the process of cartilage tissue repair, has anesthetic and anti-inflammatory effect. Replenishes endogenous glucosamine deficiency, stimulates the synthesis of hyaluronic acid and proteoglycans of synovial fluid. Promotes the fixation of sulfur in the synthesis of chondroitinsulfuric acid. Restores enzymatic processes in the cells of the synovial membrane and articular cartilage. Increases the permeability of the joint capsule. It inhibits the development of degenerative processes in the joints and restores their function.
Thus, Elbona prevents the destruction of cartilage, promotes the restoration of cartilage tissue, improves joint mobility and reduces joint pain, as a result of which it also reduces the need for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Pharmacokinetics
When taken orally, glucosamine sulfate is absorbed by 90% from the gastrointestinal tract. Bioavailability is 26%, half-life is 70 hours.
Pharmacokinetic studies show that intramuscular administration of the drug easily achieves those concentrations of glucosamine sulfate in the joint cavity for which an effective pathogenetic effect on chondrocytes and extracellular matrix components in patients with osteoarthritis has been proven.
Injection of the drug three times a week at 400 mg for a 6-week course leads to a clinically proven improvement in patients with knee osteoarthritis compared with placebo. Thanks to intramuscular injection, it is possible to quickly achieve an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect, as well as prevent the progression of osteoarthritis, as a result of which the need for arthroplasty is reduced.
Indications for use
- primary and secondary osteoarthritis of the joints of the spine and peripheral joints;
- spondyloarthrosis.
Contraindications
For both dosage forms of Elbona:
- pregnancy and lactation;
- children under 12 years old;
- severe renal impairment;
- hypersensitivity to any component of the drug.
Additionally, for a solution for intramuscular injection (including due to the presence of lidocaine in the composition):
- phenylketonuria;
- a history of epileptiform seizures;
- acute heart failure;
- violation of cardiac conduction;
- severe liver dysfunctions.
According to the instructions, Elbon should be used with caution in the following cases:
- diabetes;
- bronchial asthma;
- intolerance to seafood;
- arterial hypotension (solution for intramuscular injection);
- chronic heart failure (solution for intramuscular injection).
Instructions for the use of Elbona: method and dosage
Solution for i / m administration
In this dosage form, Elbona is intended exclusively for intramuscular administration.
Before use, the ampoule with the drug (2 ml) is mixed with the ampoule of the solvent (1 ml) in one syringe.
The prepared solution is administered in 1 dose (total - 3 ml) three times a week for 4–6 weeks.

Side effects
Elbona is generally well tolerated. In some cases, the following side effects are noted: flatulence, constipation or diarrhea, gastralgia, allergic reactions (itching, urticaria).
With the i / m administration of the drug due to the content of lidocaine in the solution, the following may occur: numbness of the tongue and mucous membrane of the mouth, nausea, vomiting, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, disorientation, tremor, diplopia, euphoria, anaphylactic reactions, impaired cardiac conduction.
Overdose
Overdose cases were not noted.
When ingestion of a dose significantly higher than that prescribed by the doctor, it is recommended to perform gastric lavage. Further treatment is symptomatic.

Drug interactions
Glucosamine sulfate is compatible with paracetamol, glucocorticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
With the simultaneous use of quinidine, verapamil, phenytoin, amiodarone, aymaline, there is a possibility of an increase in the negative inotropic effect.
The joint appointment of beta-blockers increases the risk of bradycardia.
Glucosamine sulfate increases the muscle action of curariform drugs. Potentiates the effects of monoamine oxidase inhibitors. May enhance the depressing effect on the central nervous system of hypnotics and sedatives. Reduces the cardiotonic effect of cardiac glycosides. May reduce the effectiveness of antidiabetic drugs, teniposide, doxorubicin, etoposide.
With the simultaneous use of procainamide, the risk of developing hallucinations and arousal of the central nervous system increases.
Propranolol and cimetidine decrease hepatic clearance of lidocaine and increase the risk of toxic effects.
In the case of a combination of Elbona with polymyxin B, the inhibitory effect on neuromuscular transmission may increase. If the combined use of drugs is justified, you should carefully monitor the patient's respiratory function.
With intravenous administration of sodium thiopental or hexobarbital, respiratory depression is possible (against the background of the action of lidocaine).
When taken orally, Elbon reduces the absorption of chloramphenicol and semi-synthetic penicillins, increases the absorption of tetracyclines.

Reviews about Elbon
Reviews about Elbon are positive: it effectively relieves pain, reduces joint stiffness and improves their mobility, and also significantly reduces the need for NSAIDs. In addition, patients note the painlessness of injections, the rapid onset of the effect (compared with the use of chondroprotectors), as well as the presence of a parenteral dosage form, which is especially important for patients who have side effects from the liver and gastrointestinal tract against the background of prolonged use of NSAIDs. … Additional advantages include the convenience of using the drug (3 times a week) and the short duration of the course of treatment (only 2 months).
Some patients consider Elbona's disadvantage only that it is not sold in all pharmacies.
Elbona price in pharmacies
