Sodium sulfate is a laxative.
pharmachologic effect
Sodium sulfate is a saline laxative.
The action of the drug is based on the slow absorption of salt in the intestine, due to which water accumulates in it, the receptors of the intestinal mucosa are irritated, peristalsis increases, the contents of the intestine are diluted and excreted.
The use of sodium sulfate, unlike herbal laxatives, allows you to cleanse the intestines along its entire length.
The laxative effect of the drug appears after 4-6 hours. after application.
The agent also helps to remove bile, so it can be prescribed to relieve swelling.

Indications for the use of sodium sulfate solution

Sodium sulfate solution is also used after antihelminthic therapy. This allows you to remove dead parasites and their waste products from the intestines and thereby prevent intoxication.
Some experts recommend using the drug in preparation for fasting therapy. It is believed that food leftovers in the intestines negatively affect well-being at the beginning of a fast, especially for beginners.
Mode of application
A solution of sodium sulfate is prescribed for adults to take in a dosage of 15-30g at a time.
For children, the dosage of the solution is calculated by year: 1 g for one year of life.
It is better to take a laxative on an empty stomach.
To prepare a solution, 30 g of powder must be diluted in warm water.
Side effects
The solution may cause indigestion, intestinal colic, nausea, and profuse urination.
Contraindications
Saline laxative is contraindicated in acute inflammation of the abdominal cavity: gastrointestinal ulcers, ulcerative inflammation of the colon, inflammation of the peritoneum, appendicitis, during menstruation, pregnancy, hemorrhoids in the acute stage, exhaustion of the body, hypotension, in old age.
Long-term therapy with sodium sulfate is contraindicated. it interferes with the absorption of drugs and nutrients from food.
