Dexa-Gentamicin is a drug with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. It is used in ophthalmology.
Release form and composition
- eye drops: transparent, colorless (5 ml each in polymer dropper bottles, 1 bottle in a cardboard box);
- eye ointment: translucent, white with a yellowish tinge of color (2.5 g each in aluminum tubes with a polyethylene cap, 1 tube in a cardboard box).
Active substances in 1 ml drops:
- gentamicin (in the form of sulfate) - 3 mg;
- dexamethasone sodium phosphate - 1 mg.
Excipients of drops: potassium hydrogen phosphate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, water for injection, sodium chloride, benzalkonium chloride.
Active substances in 1 g of ointment:
- gentamicin (in the form of sulfate) - 3 mg;
- dexamethasone - 0.3 mg.
Excipients of the ointment: lanolin, liquid paraffin, white petrolatum.
Indications for use
- allergic processes of the anterior segment of the eye, accompanied by bacterial infection;
- infections of the anterior segment of the eye caused by microorganisms sensitive to gentamicin: barley, keratitis, conjunctivitis, blepharitis;
- inflammation in the postoperative period, for example, after antiglaucoma surgery or after cataract removal (for treatment and prevention).
Contraindications
- mycobacterial eye infections;
- corneal epitheliopathy;
- viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva (including lesions in chickenpox);
- acute purulent eye diseases with damage to the corneal epithelium;
- trauma and ulcerative lesions of the cornea;
- fungal eye diseases;
- increased intraocular pressure;
- keratitis caused by the viruses Herpes simplex and Varicella zoster (treelike keratitis);
- age up to 18 years;
- I trimester of pregnancy;
- hypersensitivity to drug components.
Do not use contact lenses during treatment.
Clinical studies on the use of Dex-Gentamicin in children have not been conducted. In pediatrics, the drug can be used only if the expected effect outweighs the potential risks of side effects.
In the II and III trimesters of pregnancy and during lactation, this ophthalmic agent can be used if the intended benefit to the woman outweighs the potential risks to the fetus / child.
Method of administration and dosage
Dexa-Gentamicin in the form of eye drops should be instilled into the conjunctival sac 1-2 drops from 4 to 6 times a day.
In the form of an ointment, the drug is placed in the conjunctival sac, a single dose is a strip 1 cm long, the frequency of use is 2-3 times a day.
The duration of treatment is determined individually, depending on the severity of symptoms, individual reaction to the drug and the presence / absence of side effects, but usually does not exceed 2-3 weeks.
Side effects
Possible side effects: increased severity of bacterial corneal infection, mydriasis and ptosis, fungal infection, herpetic keratitis, contact dermatitis, corneal perforation in patients with keratitis.
With long-term treatment, the development of steroid cataracts and secondary glaucoma is possible.
If the drug is used after an injury, there is a possibility of delayed healing.
In rare cases, a burning sensation in the eye after instillation and allergic reactions are possible.
An overdose with Dex-Gentamicin is unlikely.
special instructions
During the application of the ointment and instillation of drops, contact of the tube / bottle with the surface of the conjunctiva and skin should be avoided.
With the simultaneous use of several ophthalmic agents, it is recommended to lay Dexa-Gentamicin ointment no earlier than 15 minutes after instillation of eye drops.
Patients with a history of glaucoma and people undergoing long-term drug therapy (more than 2 weeks) need to periodically monitor intraocular pressure.
It is recommended to refrain from using contact lenses during treatment. If this is not possible, before instilling the drug, they should be removed and reinstalled after at least 20 minutes.
In case of development of side effects, the remedy must be canceled, and then consult an ophthalmologist.
Immediately after using the drug, a temporary impairment of visual acuity is possible and, as a result, a slowdown in psychomotor reactions. In this regard, within 30 minutes after instillation, you should refrain from driving a car and performing tasks that require increased attention.
Drug interactions
Other cholinergic drugs, atropine and mydriasis-inducing drugs, can increase intraocular pressure.
Gentamicin - one of the active substances of Dex-Gentamicin - is incompatible with cloxacillin, heparin, amphotericin B, cephalothin and sulfadiazine. With their simultaneous use, precipitation is possible in the conjunctival cavity.
