Biofer is an antianemic drug that stimulates hematopoiesis.
Release form and composition
Dosage form - chewable tablets: round, dark brown with the possible presence of darker inclusions, on one side there is a dividing line (10 pcs. In a blister, 3 blisters in a cardboard box).
1 chewable tablet contains:
- active ingredients: iron (III) hydroxide polymaltose - 318.2 mg (equivalent to 100 mg of iron), folic acid - 0.35 mg;
- auxiliary components: caramel, lactose monohydrate, colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, sodium chloride, mannitol, chocolate flavor, sodium methyl parahydroxybenzoate, aspartame, sodium propyl parahydroxybenzoate, vanilla flavor, purified talc, purified water.
Indications for use
- treatment of latent and clinically significant iron deficiency anemia;
- prevention of folic acid and iron deficiency, including the period before, during and after pregnancy, the period of breastfeeding.
Contraindications
- hemochromatosis (excess iron in the body);
- anemias not associated with iron deficiency (hemolytic anemia, megaloblastic anemia caused by a lack of vitamin B 12);
- violation of iron utilization (lead anemia, sideroachrestic anemia, thalassemia);
- age up to 12 years.
It is recommended to prescribe Biofer with caution to patients with gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, inflammatory pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT).
In the first trimester of pregnancy, use is indicated only in case of acute need, provided that the benefits to the mother from therapy are much higher than the possible risk to the fetus.
When breastfeeding, the drug is allowed only for clinical reasons.
Method of administration and dosage
The tablets are taken orally during or immediately after a meal, swallowing whole or chewing.
The dose of the drug and the duration of administration is prescribed by the doctor based on the individual severity of iron deficiency.
The daily dose can be taken once.
Recommended dosage for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia:
- patients over 12 years old, women during breastfeeding: 1 pc. 1-3 times a day. It usually takes 3 to 5 months for the hemoglobin level to return to normal. Then you should continue taking a dose of 1 pc. per day for several months to replenish the iron supply in the body;
- pregnancy period: 1 pc. 2-3 times a day until the normalization of hemoglobin levels in the blood. Then, to restore iron stores, the intake is continued at a dose of 1 pc. per day, as a rule, before delivery.
Prevention of folic acid and iron deficiency and treatment of latent iron deficiency are recommended in a dose of 1 pc. per day. Therapy for latent iron deficiency should be continued for 1–2 months.
Side effects
- digestive system: very rarely - constipation or diarrhea, nausea, a feeling of fullness in the gastrointestinal tract and pressure in the epigastric region; possibly - staining of feces in a dark color;
- others: very rarely - the development of allergic reactions to folic acid.
special instructions
Patients with diabetes should take into account that 1 tablet contains 0.06 XE (bread units).
The dark color of feces is due to the presence of non-absorbed iron, therefore, should not cause concern about the patient's clinical condition.
Drug interactions
The interaction of Biofer with other drugs has not been established.
