Betamethasone is a drug, a hormone of the adrenal cortex. It has a strong anti-inflammatory effect.
pharmachologic effect
It belongs to the group of synthetic corticosteroids (adrenal cortex hormones). The drug has an anti-inflammatory effect. In a soluble form, Betamethasone promotes the rapid absorption of the active substance of the drug. As a result, an almost instantaneous intense action is observed, although rather short-term.
Release form
Betamethasone is available in the form of tablets, which contain 0.0005 g of betamethasone.
Solution for injection is produced in ampoules of 1 ml (0.0053 g of betamethasone sodium phosphate).
Betamethasone ointment contains 0.64 mg of betamethasone dipropionate.
Indications for use
According to the instructions, Betamethasone is used in such cases:
- diseases that are characterized by damage to blood vessels and connective tissue (collagenosis): rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, dermatomyositis;
- Allergic diseases: bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, Quincke's edema, drug allergy, complications of blood transfusion;
- skin diseases with the presence of allergies: atonic and contact dermatitis, neurodermatitis, allergic eczema, exfoliative dermatitis, dermatitis herpetiformis, urticaria;
- eye diseases of an inflammatory nature: uveitis, chorioretinitis, sympathetic iridocyclitis, central retinitis, herpes zoster of the eye, optic neuritis, retrobulbar neuritis;
- tumor diseases of the lymph nodes;
- soft tissue diseases: bursitis, synovitis, tendosynovitis;
- diseases of the hematopoietic system: idiopathic, thrombocytopenic and allergic purpura;
- adrenogenital syndrome;
- acute gouty arthritis;
- pemphigus;
- ulcerative colitis;
- nephrotic syndrome;
- emphysema of the lungs;
- pulmonary fibrosis;

Instructions for the use of Betamethasone and doses
Betamethasone is prescribed depending on the severity of the disease and the individual needs of the patient. The dose of the drug depends on the type of disease and is divided into initial and maintenance. The initial dose is used immediately, and after improvement of the condition, Betamethasone is prescribed in a maintenance dose.
Rheumatic arthritis and rheumatic diseases: the initial dose is 1-2.5 mg, the maintenance dose is 0.5-1.5 mg;
Acute rheumatic fever: the initial dose is 6-8 mg, which is maintained as directed;
Systemic lupus erythematosus: the initial dose is 4.0-5.0 mg, which is maintained as directed;
Asthma: the initial dose is 3.5-4.5 mg, maintained as directed;
Chronic bronchial asthma: the initial dose is 3.5 mg, the maintenance dose is 0.5-2.5 mg;
Pollen allergy: the initial dose is 1.5-2.5 mg, which is maintained as directed;
Inflammatory eye diseases: the initial dose is 2.5-4.5 mg, which is maintained as directed;
Pulmonary emphysema and fibrosis: the initial dose is 2.0-3.5 mg, the maintenance dose is 1.0-2.5 mg;
Adrenogenital syndrome: the initial dose is 1.0-1.5 mg, which is maintained as directed;
Bureit: the initial dose is 1.0-2.5 mg, which is maintained as directed.
The daily dose of the drug is best taken in the morning (coincidence with the biological rhythm of hormone release).
Betamethasone ointment (betamethasone dipropionate) is used for topical use.
Apply to the skin with a thin layer 2 times a day, to achieve the best clinical effect, it is possible to apply an occlusive dressing.
The course of treatment with Betamethasone ointment (betamethasone dipropionate) is carried out for 1-2 weeks, at least 3 or more weeks.
