Bar-VIPS is a radiopaque agent used in the study of the digestive tract.
Release form and composition
The drug is available in the form of a powder for preparation of a suspension for oral administration: light cream with a gray tint or white, fine powder mass with a specific fruit smell [240 g or 100 g each in combined (polyethylene terephthalate, aluminum foil, polyethylene) bags, in a cardboard box of 40 or 60 bags and instructions for use of Bar-VIPS].
100 g of the preparation contains:
- active substance: barium sulfate - 98.942 g;
- auxiliary components: sorbitol, sodium citrate dihydrate, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, banana flavor, Espumisan 40 [carmellose sodium, simethicone, sodium saccharinate, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, polysorbate 80, colloidal silicon dioxide, sodium cyclamate, hydrochloric aromatic acid (1M)].

Bar-VIPS is a complex X-ray contrast agent designed to obtain a clear image of the microrelief of the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) organs during X-ray studies. The pronounced adhesive properties of the drug contribute to a thorough enveloping of the mucous membrane of the digestive tract, which makes it possible to detect and study subtle changes in the microrelief of the gastrointestinal mucosa.
Pharmacokinetics
After entering the body from the gastrointestinal tract, it is not absorbed and does not enter the systemic circulation.
It is completely excreted within 24-48 hours.
Has a low toxic effect.
Indications for use
The use of Bar-VIPS is indicated for X-ray examination of the pharynx, esophagus, stomach and intestines, including the double contrast method.
Contraindications
Absolute:
- violation of the act of swallowing;
- perforation of the mucous membrane of the digestive tract or suspicion of it;
- esophageal stenosis;
- intestinal obstruction;
- bleeding from the digestive tract;
- constipation;
- atresia;
- condition after surgical intervention on the digestive tract;
- esophagotracheal fistulas;
- malabsorption syndrome;
- food allergy;
- period of pregnancy;
- hypersensitivity to drug components.
It is recommended to use Bar-VIPS with caution in the general serious condition of the patient.
Bar-VIPS, instructions for use: method and dosage
The suspension prepared from Bar-VIPS powder is intended for oral administration or rectal administration.
To prepare a suspension, the powder is gradually dissolved in boiled water, stirring continuously for 3 minutes.
For oral administration, to the contents of a package of 240 g or 100 g, add the amount of water in a proportion from 4 ÷ 1 to 3 ÷ 1.
For rectal administration in the study of the large intestine by the method of retrograde double contrast, 720 g of powder dissolved in 300 ml of water are used.
The dose of the suspension taken orally depends on the research method and can range from 15–20 ml to 100 ml.
Side effects
The development of reactions of individual intolerance, nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea is possible.
Against the background of the use of the drug in the recommended doses for routine studies, undesirable effects are not observed.
When examinations using gas-forming substances for double contrast, discomfort in the stomach area may occur. There is a risk of "barium" appendicitis, intestinal spasms.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms of Bar-VIPS have not been established.
special instructions
Patients (adults and older children) are given a baking soda solution or powder immediately prior to the double contrast study. The dose of baking soda depends on age and can range from 1.5-3.5 g, it is immediately washed down with a solution of citric acid (1-3 g). In this case, the total volume of distilled water should be no more than 7-15 ml.

Application during pregnancy and lactation
It is not recommended to use Bar-VIPS during the gestation period.
Breastfeeding is not a contraindication for the use of a radiopaque contrast agent.
Pediatric use
In children, Bar-VIPS can be used to study intestinal motility, refusing to use special research methods. The suspension of the child's small intestine passes within 1–2 hours after ingestion, this time is enough to study its motor function and structure. The suspension moves along the large intestine for 4 hours, such a speed of passage can significantly reduce the duration of the examination of the intestine and reduce the radiation exposure by 2 times.
In young children, double contrasting is impractical.

With the simultaneous use of other drugs, no interaction was noted.

Bar-VIPS is the first Russian X-ray contrast agent developed in the form of a finished dosage form based on barium sulfate. The barium suspension used earlier was barium sulfate, which was simply mixed with water before testing. It quickly delaminated and contained large particles, which sharply negatively affected the image quality.
Since the effectiveness of double contrasting primarily depends on the qualitative characteristics of the barium sulfate preparation, the use of Bar-VIPS allows using this technique in X-ray examination of the gastrointestinal tract. Thanks to it, a clear picture of the surface of the mucous membrane is obtained in conditions of relaxation of the tone of the walls of the esophagus, which allows you to study the object under study in great detail and diagnose minimal pathological changes in the area of the esophagus, stomach, duodenum and small intestine.
