Vagotomy (vagotomia; anatomical nervus vagus - vagus nerve + Greek tome - incision, dissection) is a surgical operation used to treat peptic ulcer disease, in which the vagus nerve or some of its branches are transected.
Types of vagotomy:
Selective (selectiva; synonym: selective vagotomy) - vagotomy, performed with the intersection of all gastric branches of the vagus nerve, with the exception of those that run to the solar plexus and liver; carried out below the esophageal opening of the diaphragm;
Selective proximal (selectiva proximalis) - selective vagotomy, in which the branches of the vagus nerve are crossed exclusively to the upper parts of the stomach;
Stem (truncularis; synonym: truncular vagotomy) - vagotomy, in which the trunks of the vagus nerve are intersected before their branching over the diaphragm; causes denervation of all organs located in the abdominal cavity.
