Overdose by Berodual
Breathing difficulties in bronchial asthma and chronic forms of obstructive bronchitis are caused by bronchial spasm. To eliminate it, medicines with a bronchodilating (dilating bronchi) effect are used, one of such means is Berodual inhalation aerosol. It contains two active components: iprotropium bromide (m-anticholinergic) and fenoterol bromide (beta 2 -adreomimetic). They complement each other, providing high-quality relaxation of the muscular layer of the bronchi and rapid relief of bronchospasm.
Violation of the rules for taking the drug, an increase in the prescribed dose or frequency of administration may cause an overdose.

How much Berodual is needed for an overdose?
The aerosol is intended for the treatment of adults and children over 6 years of age. For relief of bronchospasm, 2 inhalation doses are usually recommended. If the attack does not resolve within 5 minutes, the drug can be reused at the same dose. Thus, the maximum allowable single amount of Berodual is 4 inhalation doses.
The drug can be used not only for a single dose, but also for long-term therapy. In this case, usually prescribed 1-2 inhalation dose 3-4 times a day. Taking more than 8 doses of Berodual during the day leads to the development of an overdose.
Signs of overdose
The main symptoms of an overdose with Berodual:
- pain in the region of the heart;
- increased blood pressure;
- arrhythmia;
- tachycardia;
- increased pulse pressure;
- paradoxical bronchospasm;
- tremor;
- redness of the face;
- increased thirst;
- cough;
- nausea, vomiting;
- allergic reactions (urticaria, Quincke's edema);
- mental disorders.
In severe overdose, arterial hypertension and tachycardia are quickly replaced by hypotension and bradycardia, and collapse develops.
An overdose of Berodual can lead to an acute attack of angle-closure glaucoma. Its signs:
- headache localized on the side of the lesion, radiating to the temple;
- pain in the orbital region of the affected eye, redness, swelling;
- irregular pupil, dilated;
- sometimes - hemorrhages in the cornea;
- rapidly growing disturbances in visual function (visible objects are perceived vaguely, colored spots, glare appear in front of the eyes);
- sometimes - nausea, vomiting.

First aid for overdose
First aid when symptoms of an overdose with Berodual appear is to stop using it, after which you should call an ambulance or deliver the victim to the hospital on your own.
Antidote
A specific antidote to Berodual is cardioselective beta-blockers (Atenolol, Sectral, Betaxol).
When is medical attention needed?
In case of an overdose with Berodual, medical attention is needed in 100% of cases.
Cardioselective beta-blockers (antidote to Berodual) are prescribed with sufficient caution, with careful dose selection, since errors in their use can increase the severity of bronchial obstruction.
In addition to the specific, symptomatic treatment is carried out aimed at eliminating dysfunctions of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems or at preventing their development:
- for respiratory disorders - inhalation with humidified oxygen. The increase in respiratory failure is the basis for transferring the patient to artificial ventilation. In order to relieve paradoxical bronchospasm, antispasmodic and anticholinergic drugs are prescribed, according to indications, corticosteroid hormones (Prednisolone, Dexamethasone) and / or antihistamines (Tavegil, Pipolphen, Suprastin) can be prescribed;
- to lower blood pressure - injections of 2% papaverine hydrochloride solution (subcutaneously), 2.5% aminazin solution (intramuscularly) or 2.4% aminazine solution (intravenously);
- for relief of psychomotor agitation - tranquilizers (Seduxen, Relanium);
- with the development of an attack of angle-closure glaucoma - the standard algorithm for its relief (Diacarb intravenously or orally, 2% solution of Pilocarpine topically, etc.);
- in case of respiratory arrest and cardiac activity - a full range of resuscitation measures.
Possible consequences
In the case of a mild overdose with Berodual and timely assistance, the symptoms of an overdose usually disappear within a day and, as a rule, have no consequences.
With severe intoxications, the prognosis is less favorable, since complications are frequent:
- pneumonia against the background of respiratory distress;
- acute vascular disorders (stroke, myocardial infarction) against the background of a sharp increase in blood pressure, especially in the elderly.
