Azidrop is a broad-spectrum antibacterial drug belonging to the azalide class, active against gram-positive bacteria (with the exception of strains resistant to erythromycin); used in ophthalmology.

Release form and composition

Dosage form - eye drops: transparent oily, colorless or light yellow liquid (0.25 g each in single-dose vials made of low density polyethylene, 6 vials soldered together in the form of a tape, packed in bags of combined material; 1 bag in a cardboard box).

1 g of drops contains:

• Active ingredient: azithromycin dihydrate - 15 mg (equivalent to 14.3 mg of azithromycin);
• Auxiliary components: medium chain triglycerides.

Indications for use

Azidrop is an antibiotic for the treatment of conjunctivitis caused by microorganisms sensitive to azithromycin, including Chlamydia trachomatis.

Contraindications

The drug is contraindicated in children under 1 year of age, in patients with hypersensitivity to any component of Azidrop or other antibiotics of the macrolide group.

Method of administration and dosage

Azidrop drops are applied topically.

The drug must be instilled into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye 1 drop 2 times a day (morning and evening) for 3 days.

Children under 1 year of age with trachomatous conjunctivitis do not need dose adjustment. The experience of using the drug for purulent bacterial conjunctivitis in children under 2 years of age is not enough.

Precautionary measures:

• Wash hands thoroughly before instillation and after the procedure;
• Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye, eyelid or other surfaces;
• Throw away the disposable dropper tube even if solution remains in it.

Side effects

Classification of side effects by frequency: very often (more than 1/10), often (more than 1/100, less than 1/10), infrequently (more than 1/1000, less than 1/100), very rarely (less than 1/10000):

• From the side of the organ of vision: very often - eye discomfort after instillation (tingling, burning and itching); often - a feeling of a foreign body in the eye, a feeling of sticking of the eyelids, blurred vision; infrequently - lacrimation; very rarely - edema of the eyelids, conjunctival hyperemia, erythema, keratitis, eczema, conjunctivitis (including allergic), eye allergy;
• From the immune system: very rarely - Quincke's edema, hypersensitivity reactions.

special instructions

Systemic exposure to azithromycin is insignificant, therefore, the harmful effect of the drug on the course of pregnancy is not expected. Azidrop can be used to treat pregnant women as prescribed by a physician after a careful assessment of the balance of benefits and possible risks.

There is limited data that azithromycin is excreted in breast milk, however, given the low systemic availability and low doses of Azidrop, the effect on the body of newborns is extremely insignificant, so the drug can be used with breastfeeding.

Azidrop drops should not be taken orally or given by injection.

The drug should not be administered peri- and intraocularly.

In case of development of allergic reactions, treatment should be discontinued.

With the simultaneous appointment of other ophthalmic drugs, Azidrop should be instilled last, 15 minutes after instillation of another agent.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae conjunctivitis and non-trachomatous conjunctivitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis require systemic treatment.

Azidrop is not recommended for children 1-2 years old, except for the need to treat trachomatous conjunctivitis.

This drug is not intended for the prevention of bacterial conjunctivitis in newborns.

Each patient to whom Azidrop is prescribed must be warned that the course of treatment lasts 3 days. Even if after the last instillation there are signs of bacterial conjunctivitis, therapy cannot be continued.

After instillation, transient blurred vision is possible, in this case, immediately after instillation (until vision is restored), it is recommended to refrain from driving and performing potentially dangerous types of work.

Contact lenses should not be worn in patients with bacterial conjunctivitis.

Drug interactions

Studies on the interaction of Azidrop with specific drugs have not been conducted.

Due to the local use of Azidrop, there are no detectable concentrations of azithromycin in the blood plasma, therefore, interaction with any of the drugs that interacted with azithromycin when taken orally is not expected.
