Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Otilonium bromide is a myotropic antispasmodic. It has a pronounced antispastic effect on the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, while it does not affect normal intestinal peristalsis. The effect of the drug is due to its ability to provide a moderately pronounced antimuscarinic local effect and act as a Ca 2+ channel blocker.
Pharmacokinetics
The active substance of Spazmomen after oral administration enters into a bond with the membranes of smooth muscle cells, predominantly of the large intestine. Systemic absorption of the drug is low, which explains its insignificant concentration in blood plasma. Further, otylonium bromide is released into the intestinal lumen and excreted from the body mainly with bile.
The drug does not have teratogenic, embryotoxic and mutagenic effects, does not exhibit atropine-like properties.
Indications for use
